Default Marriage to US Citizen

Hi,
My US citizen girlfriend and I have been together for 7 years. I am a
foreign national who originally came to the US, with my girlfriend whom I
met abroad, to study on a F-1 student visa. I have completed my studies and
now am currently on the "Optional practical training" option that F-1
students can apply for. We want to get married before the "Optional
practical training" expires, in about 7 months.

What would be the best approach? Stay here and just get married or leave and
apply for the K-1.

Thanks
Ant

I don't have specific advice, but my friend got married to a USC during his OPT and adjusted status after that, and it worked out well.
