Default Marriage License - Social Security No

Hey folks,

My visa just got delivered

My fiancee and I are planning to get married on the 21st February. We will obviously need to get a marriage license at least a week beforehand. My fiancee says that she needs my social security number or ID number? to get the license. Nothing arrived with the visa packet which I am not allowed to open.

Does anyone know when I will get this number?

Thanks

M81,

You will get the SSN after you apply for it, once you qualify for it. Which right now you don't. As a K1 you will qualify once you enter the USA.

The SSN has become a defacto ID number for people in the USA because almost everyone here has one. However, even though many entities use it for their own purposes, it can only be required for those limited purposed for which it is intended.

I'll bet that it is not in fact needed for the marriage license although the clerk taking the license application may not realize it. Your fiancee should simply tell the clerk that you do not have a SSN. Or, you can apply once you enter the USA and wait until you have it before applying for the marriage license. But I would not allow obtaining a SSN to dictate my marriage plans.

Regards, JEff

I think it depends on the state but when I got my license they asked if I had a SSN, which I did, and then said they use something like 999-99-9999 for people who don't have one because it's not a legal requirement to have a valid SSN, but they can't process the application without one.

It might vary by state, but here in Arizona my alien fiance did not need a SSN in order to get the marriage license and then get married. In fact, we applied for his SSN the same day we applied for the marriage license...and then got married that same afternoon.

Didn't need it in New York State. The clerk put down his passport #.

I think the clerk used my fiance's passport number in lieu of the SSN since he did not have it when we married. Otherwise, ask them to enter a dummy one like Duncan mentioned.
