Default K1 interview in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

It's been a week, but I've been busy, so here's the report.

January 6, 2004

We arrived at the consulate at 6:15AM to find out that the requirements for
the photos had changed. My fiancee went to get the pictures taken while I
got in line. After she finished with the pictures she checked with someone
to make sure we were in the correct line, which we weren't. Thankfully we
didn't have to get in the other line and we were inside the building by
6:45. They called her name around 8:35AM and we went up to the window to
deposit the forms. While we were at the window we found out that she had
paid the wrong application fee back in October so we had to go up the street
to the bank and pay the correct fee. We took care of that and returned the
receipt to the window. They sent us back to the waiting area to wait to be
called for the interview. We had just bought sandwiches and juice and sat
down to eat when they called her name to go in for the interview. We
grabbed everything, food and all, and headed in. The officer spoke more
with me than with my fiancee. He was very relaxed which helped put us more
at ease. The only thing that I thought was a bit unusual was that he didn't
ask for the affidavit of support at all. He concluded the interview by
reminding us that we will have 90 days to get married once she enters the
country, which we already knew. He gave her a sheet to return on January 8
to pick up the visa. We were finished with the interview by 9:45.

When she went to pick it up on Thursday they told her that she had forgotten
to sign several forms. She signed them and she has to go again tomorrow to
pick up the visa.

I am hoping to go down to pick her up in February or March and we have set a
wedding date of April 23. It's hard to believe that we can finally start
making definite plans. We have been engaged for more than a year and it
took just over 11 months from the time I sent the I 129F to NSC until the
interview and the issuance of the visa. It's been a long road, but it's
worth it.

CONGRATS!!!

That is really strange that they did not even ask for the Affidavit of Support. My family all immigrated from Santo Domingo, and from our experience and others as well, we know that that is one hard Consulate to have deal with. Best wishes.

I was surprised that things went as well as they did. I have heard horror
stories about that consulate. They have a reputation for being very picky
and demanding more than is technically required. I have heard that
sometimes they ask for the I-864 for the K1 instead of the I-134. I brought
only the I-134 because that was the only form mentioned in the letter that
my fiancee received. I was very happy that they didn't ask me for it, but I
know that had I not brought it, they would have wanted it.

Now we're trying to work out exactly when she will be able to come up here.
The soonest she will leave is the third week of February and the latest is
the third week of March.

Congradulations.....another sucess.

My husband and I went through their process rather painlessly, the real pain in dealing with USCIS here on this side. Good luck with your marriage and AOS, it'll be a roller coaster ride from here on out, at least you're over the first hump!

If you do a search you'll see what we have gone through so far...
