Generally religious or health reasons..
That is, say you have a sick child you can't leave.
Financial ability to travel isn't generally one of them

Don't really have anything to add...yeah from what I hear it is pretty much impossible to get a K1 w/o having met except for the reasons mentioned...just wanted to wish you luck in be able to get over there to meet her.

Going to the Philippines
I know that I did a flight for a client from SAV to MNL in August for under 900......I also did a one way for a client to fly SAV-MNL one way for 600+ in Sept. So the 2000 dollars you mentioned for a trip makes me wonder? Wouldn't you be staying with your fiancee or her family when there? I'm a travel agent but I also have a UK spouse that I visit while waiting for the 130 to come thru.

I just did a search on travelocity.com, seats available Boston to Manila
$798 round trip. You can swing this. I'm taking extra job for Christmas to
buy ticket to see my fiancé in Russia.
