Default I-Visas and the legal loophole

I hear that if I get an I-Visa as a journo or consultant, I can stay in the U.S for upto 5 years (depends on what the border guard says) and work for UK companies while there.

Does that mean i can then do a gig for a US company, then get them to pay my UK company that then pays me?
