However, gaining British citizenship now will make it easier to live in the UK (or much of Europe) again in the future.

FMPOV, the problem is that one can only vote in the district/state in which they are residing. As a USC, if you have lived in the US and voted, you are registered for a particular district/state and can continue voting by absentee ballot. However, you have are planning on moving to a new state and/or district you cannot register to vote until you have actually taken up residency there.
