Your premise was that the lack of the "aggravation" associated with filing US tax returns should have made the OP "immediately raise the question" when he "first learned than I-864 requires copies of the sponsor's tax returns".

My point was that since the average UK citizen would have no idea that filing US tax returns involved such a high level of "aggravation" the "lack" of such "aggravation" would not have been noticed and thus could not have prompted the question that you suggested.
