Default how was it for you ;)

december 11 - D-day.

booked our flights through ebookers today. mum paid. god bless mum xxx she got
a tax rebate this year and the first thing she said was, 'well, that's your
flight money, isn't it, dear.' poor as a church mouse, my mum, with a heart as
wide as a wide-mouthed frog (o i can't explain wide-mouthed frogs - think giddy
kippers with bandy legs and if still in doubt hassle patrick about it!).

anyway, there is a point to this post but i may have just dropped it in the
wine... ngh. oh yes... my flight cost under £100. 'course, add to that two
children, airport taxes etc and it went up a bit. but under £535 for three of
us ain't bad - continental do a good one-way deal and actually do half-price
seats for kiddies so... well worth checking out.

i change at newark. left myself 5 hours downtime there to knock over customs
signs, apologise, lose myself, find myself, join the wrong queue, be sent to
right queue, get to customs (they laughed at me in dallas when i declared my
bar of chocolate but the sign in the toilets promised evil rewards for those
who smuggle in food and i confess to slight paranoia :P) and have my wedding
clothes, cheese grater and pancake pan inspected (a good pancake pan takes
years of breaking in and i'm hanged if i'm starting a new life without old
faithful!) and show our collection of barbies to the INS, as i figure it's much
more interesting than the chest x-ray i'll also have handy. ok so 5 hours is a
little OTT. but the choice was 2 or 5 and i figured 2 might not be enough as
they do all your processing at the first american port of call.... don't they?
do they? someone tell me i got that right!

anyway, IF i got that right (damned fine wine, this, tesco's own brand, no
less), here's a bit of info that might be useful to anyone coming in on a K1
and changing planes in the US. if you use someone like ebookers on the internet
it looks like you have no choice about the time of your connecting flight. but
if you phone them and tell them the flight you found, they can move the time of
the connecting flight around to give you more leg-room. you lose the £10 online
booking discount but hey - less than the price of three bottles of tesco's
finest!

while we're about it... anyone else been through newark lately?

how was it for you?

dish the dirt. i am agog (also sloshed - so of course this is the point where i
announce i love you all xxx)

Hi Scarlett,

We love you to, and your dog toto too.

It must be us northerners because I would have taken the 5 hour option over the 2 hour option as well. 2 hours only needs one pissy INS official or an air traffic control prob at Manchester and your the mad woman dragging two screaming children by the ankles through Newark Aiport.

Your Mums a good 'en, wanna swap? Carry on drinking Tesco's finest

Hey Scarlett,

Very good choice for Continental! I think that it is my favorite US airline. Maybe it is just me, but I find the airline personal extremely nice and the flights are relaxing. Last spring break, I couldn't get a direct flight Detroit-Paris through Northwest (only airline to have direct flights Detroit-Paris), and I had to take a Continental flight through Newark. I was unhappy because I had had to wait so long to book my flight because of you know who who had to issue my AP. In the end, I never had such a nice flight back home. I came out of the plane totally fresh, didn't see the jetlag and was running all day on the arrival day in Paris.

There was a mother with 2 little kids in the row next to mine. I helped her to carry the strollers and walked one of her kids while she was carrying other stuffs and holding the other kid. She told me that at the connection in Newark, some airline personal helped her switching planes with the little airport cars. She told me also that they were very nice and helpful with the kids. So, myabe you can benefit from the same (free) service :-) !

I would have taken the 5 hours layover in Newark. On my return trip (trhough Newark), I don't remember if I had 1h30 or 2h30 layover. First, there was a "long" line to clear immigration. Then, I had to go to the second inspection room to get my AP stamp (pretty funny by the way. The immigration officer would not let me touch my AP anymore once I had given it to him. He put it in a plastic pouch, explained me where to go and waved a guy with a gun who was standing at the exit of immigration. I started walking and was told to stop and wait for the guy with the gun who then escorted me to the secondary inspection room. It was funny to see all the people in line look at me and feeling Sooo relieved they were not me!!!!). So anyway, the stamp was relatively fast (maybe 15-20mins wait. For comparison, the next trip I waited about 1h in Detroit). Then, I ran to get my connection. There was not an extra minute. So, I am not sure what how it is when you enter with a K but it takes probably longer, and then you have the 2 kids who will probably be exhausted by the time you reach Newark! So, 5 h seems like a good idea!

Concerning the chocolate, you are authorized to bring it into the US. There is a list of foods that you are allowed to bring. Pretty much anything cooked is Ok unless there is some meat at which point you have to amend the rule. When I return from France, I am bringing back a grocery store in my suitcases... I used to call the US customs before going, and then I found a list of the products allowed. If anybody is interested, I will post the list.

Good luck!

Damn sorry that airport security is so tight. Would have loved to go to Newark and be the first of the NG to welcome you aboard but alas and alack wouldn't be able to get through to your holding area. Use to be so easy to breeze through without a ticket.

I have been through Newark twice (on a Visa Waiver though).
Once in 1999 and once in 2001 (both times with Continental).
Newark is a very easy to navigate Airport. The international and
the national concourses of Continental were REALLY close together.
Same building - it was more a less just a matter of stepping over
to the correct line.
I loved flying with Continental. Very friendly stuff, good legroom
in coach class, nice in flight entertainment system and good food.
They also have a HUGE array of immigration "checkpoints" at
Newark (most that I have ever seen at any US airport) and
officers who will direct you to the correct line.
Good luck to you !

Did you buy a Continental ticket but are actually going via Virgin... they tend to do that sometimes?? I absolutely love Virgin Atlantic.

Anyway, Congrats on getting your visa and tickets. You sure are lucky to have your mom pay for the tickets.

Take care

Yes, I thought too that they had good legroom, but I was just wondering if it was just me. So, glad to hear that I am not the only one to think so, and that therefore, it is likely that they have actually more legroom.

Also, I had a personal entertainment system, where I could pick between several movies that were displayed on a little screen in front of me, and that rocked! For kids, they had special disney programs, and that kept the kids in the row next to mine busy. They also had "computer" games.

Uh yeah, I'm very interested. I'm flying Paris/Cincinnati on the 22nd
- my big break through. But I really really need to somehow take a lot
of purple cow chocolate with me, and nutella chocolate spread. I'm
sorry folks but I didn't grow up on peanut butter sandwiches, I grew
up with a spoon in my nutella jar so how can I live without it. There
might be more things I want to take, can't think of any right now, but
the list would be useful. Thanks.

Rest easy Nutella is sold here in the states. It has been a staple in our supermarkets in my area all my life.

Yes, Nutella is sold in the US, but it is much sweeter than the European one (and A LOT more expensive too!). And for any chocolate item, you pretty much have to bring your own, unless you like Hershey's (or you are ready to have a special "chocolate category" in your budget!)...

I am off for the week-end for our first anniversary :-)))))) , and I will post the list when I return.

Got to go!

Well that's good news! When my fiance was here in Europe and saw me
spreading nutella all over my pancakes he said he's never seen that
stuff before. So I thought that really sucks, but maybe there's still
hope
