Default Help Getting married in Brazil...

I'm planning on getting married in Brazil to my brazilian wife. I'm an american. We are planning on doing DCF. I've read the forum info here (great resource!) and pretty much understand how to file the I-130.

My main question is what do I need to get married in Brazil? I read on one site that I need all this: (is this true?)

1) U.S. Passport

2) A Certificate of Singlehood or Record of No Marriage certified by the local or state government issuing authority where you live, together with any Court Divorce Decrees of former marriages certified by the Court of competent jurisdiction, all documents Apostilled by the Secretary of State of the applicant's home state in the U.S.

3) Birth Certificate

4) Letter notarized from living Parent(s) giving written permission for you to marry a Brazilian citizen national (If your parents are deceased, submit a copy of each parent's death certificate)

5) Letter certified from local Police Station that you are not wanted as a criminal fugitive or the subject of pending charges6) Reference letter certified from local, state or federal government social services or vital records office that you are a member of the community in good standing, or in the alternative a signed and notarized reference letter from a local public official, church or minister official or other established local business or community leader attesting to your good character.

Why do I need a letter from my parents? I'm 32..come on. Plus, how do I get the letter from the Police here in the U.S.

I did not see too much about this in the forum. Plus, My fiancee is working in Italy right now. So, she can't get local information from Brazil for me. It's faster for me to do all the leg work.

I tried to call the Brazilian Embassy but it's impossible to get in touch with anyone.

Any Help Most Greatly Appreciated,
Thanks...

The embassy will probably not be able to help you. If you want to contact
them use email, they are usually quite responsive although it may take a few
days before you receive a response.
Marriage in Brazil is the jurisdiction of the state in which you will
marry so you will need to check the local laws. If you were formerly
divorced you can just about forget about being married any time soon as your
divorce papers will need to be translated into Portuguese by a certified
translator then presented by a Brazilian lawyer to the courts before you
will have approval to marry in Brazil. This can take up to a year or more.
The letter from your parents is only necessary if you are under a certain
age. Most documents will need to have a cetified translation. The
Brazilian consulate in the US will certify documents but I do not know if
the counts for anything. Once again, the Brazilian consulate in the US is
also responsive to emails.
When investigating this with my Brazilian fiance it was necessary for her
to determine what was required by the local authorities.

Good luck,
J

That's correct, it can take months for civil wedding in Brasil to
happen if the American one is divorced. That's why me and my USC
fiance (who's waiting on his divorce) decided to take the K-1 route.
Brasil didn't have this law last year, but there are so many
foreigners coming here and getting married to stay, and most of them
aren't legally divorced in their home countries. Now it got more
complicated.
Besides the DCF can take 3-4 months, just the time it takes to get a
K-1 visa. The consulate in Rio is the only one who issues immigrant
visas and they are so full of work, it takes the same amount of time.
I hope this helps a bit.
