Hi,
My fiance' is Astralian and I am an American citizen. We are looking
to bring her to the US and are trying to figure out what the fastest
way would be. We would like to marry in Australia, but if a fiance'
visa is the quickest route we are willing to marry in the States. I
have heard that a k-3 nonimmigrant spousal visa is supposed to be at
least as fast, if not faster, than getting a fiance' visa, but after
skimming through some of the posts in this newsgroup I am not
convinced that that is that case. We are also unsure if the American
consulate in Oz can issue K-3's; her attempts to get questions
answered when calling them have so far been unsuccessful (even though
they still charge her for her calls).
We'd appreciate some advice from people who have had personal
experience.
Thanks very much
Dave (American) & Eileen (Australian)

The fastest way is to board a plane, fly there, get married, walk into the US Consulate there and file for her I-130 directly. It is called direct consular filing in layman's terms and from start to finish for OZ would be 6 weeks.
She would then enter the US as a conditional permanent resident

Many thanks Rete, this does appear to be the fastest way and would
also allow us to grant her parents' wish that we marry there. Now I
just need to find a lawyer who knows what s/he is doing with this;
surprisingly, not many I have talked to seem to know about it. Is
direct consular filing a relatively new method of obtaining visas?
Thanks again

Hi, Dave.
My fiancée and I will be doing direct consular filing in Auckland, New
Zealand. I too found out that our attorney - an immigration attorney - knew
very little about direct consular filing and actually got the details from a
co-worker who had done it herself in Peru.
When I called the American Consulate in Auckland, I asked the receptionist
to forward me to someone who could help me with direct consular filing and
she didn't know what I was talking about. After a more in depth
conversation about what I needed, she was able to forward me to the correct
department.
It may not be as prevalent as the other avenues, but it definitely sounds
like the quickest route if it's available to you.
Good Luck!
