Default Foreigner married to an american citizen - permanent residency question

Dear group users,
I have a question... my sister, who is a national of El Salvador, has
been married to this guy, an american citizen, for nearly 2 years now.
She is having some problems in her marriage, but she is worried about
divorcing him because she just doesn't know whether she will be able
to retain her residency in this country. It just breaks my heart to
know that she has to stay in this relationship, receiving a lot of bad
treatment, just because she wants to make sure she won't lose her
right to permanent residency.

Thanks a million,
CentralAmericanRefugee
