I will soon send the K-1 petition to Nebraska. I called the BCIS' 800
number and asked the representative if I could translate my fiance's
birth certificate and emails into English myself, since I have a BA
and MA in French. She said yes, as long as I provide documentation
that I am fluent. So I am attaching copies of all transcripts and
diplomas. Does anyone know if this is accurate information?

Documentation of the competency of the translator is not required under U.S.
law or regulation.

Certification is required. This constitutes certification of translation:
on the same page as the translation, or on an attached page, the following
statement appears and is signed and dated. Name and address must also be
specified.

It is O.K. to do a translation for your own case. However, some consider it
better to have the translation done by a disinterested party (not the same
name as petitioner or beneficiary). You can do the translation yourself,
and have someone else that knows both languages sign the certification.
After all, the certification statement does not say the signatory *did* the
translation. Below is an example.
