Default finding a job in the UK

After going through all the hoops I now have my Green card, but, guess what, after 8 years away from home (London) I want to come back. After a short holiday spent organizing repairs to my house in Fulhan which has been rented out for 6 years, I realise just how much I long to be back in the UK. Fortunately my USC husband feels the same. I've already made contact with the usual headhunters in my field and all say much the same thing, almost impossible to get a job in advance of returning, just wondered if anyone had any tips on finding work in the UK prior to returning. I'm a specialist in international brand and communications strategy with 20+ years of global experience.

I would say that the advice you were given regarding getting work before you arrive is correct. It is probably very rare. The Brits in general view immigration as a bad thing (even though you're British anyway!) so its quite different to other places where you need to get work before the visa.

However, if your skills can be offered on a freelance basis, you could drum up some real interest by approaching the agencies. They will take a more proactive view of your situation, especially if you are able to come over for a brief visit to put your name about.

They are generally specialised for a particular industry, and I'm not quite sure what your field is so can't suggest any names, but if your experience is global, they should be able to find names of multinationals in London that might be interested.

Alternatively, consider Scotland. I read somewhere that the population of Scotland in actually falling and that they are keen for useful professionals to go and live there (there was uproar surrounding the report as they hinted that they didn't want "economic migrants" and were not suggesting that Scotland should be asylum city!!!)

The point is that if this is the policy there, try contacting the Cambers of Commerce in Glasgow and Edinburgh. This may not of course suit you if you are set on London, and there may not be the right sort of companies there for you, but its worth considering.

Thanks for the suggestions, Scotland is actually quite an attractive option for me, my family live deep in the Highlands and Edinburgh or Glasgow would be a distinct possibility.

My experience is pretty broad but basically software, high tech, converging technologies particularly relating to wireless and media. I did a six year stint as a management consultant in Germany so maybe freelance would be a good route.

Once again, thanks for the tips, good luck with your plans
