Cool.

How much money did you make with commercial activities on your site during that
period? You forgot to mention that.

Thank you for your kind inquiry. That is private information. However suffice it to
say, I will not be retiring from my regular job due to any revenue generated from
the site. ; )

For what it is worth, I have heard no complaints from my readership, only
thank-you's for providing the service. As I only put up a donations page because of
personal e-mail requests from the readership, I feel that in so doing I only met the
perceived needs/desires of the readership. The books pages are certainly not a "get
rich quick" scheme, as we get about 9-10% tops of the selling price of any book in
actual revenue.

Considering that I work a full time job and spend an average of at least 4 hours
daily on site maintenance, and answering numerous personal questions on askme and the
question board, the remuneration we receive for the site is frankly a token, at best.
It is nevertheless appreciated. However, no one ever receives any requests for
purchases or donations personally, and anyone is welcome to use the site without ever
spending a cent, including you.

Hi All!

Who gives a damn if she is making millions. Just be thankful you have someone to go
to for good information, because you sure as hell don't get it from INS or the
State Dept.

Take care,

Mike

I don't, but it would be nice to know how much she is making.

That would be FAQ Guy Mike. AFAIK he doesn't try to sell books on his FAQ pages.

am i missing something here? what's wrong with alvena making money from her site? no
one is forced to donate money to the site - it's something they do if they want to.
nor is alvena obligated to tell us how much money she makes from it. quite frankly
it's absolutely none of our business. if we find her "donations" info offensive then
we should simply stop accessing her site.

as someone going through the K1 process i am thankful that she puts so much time and
energy helping others through the various hurdles involved. to be honest, i would
rather her earn some money from doing so that some of the sleazy lawyers out there.
again, maybe i am missing something but i just dont understand the hostility. let her
make money. it's a free country for goodness sake.

Just be aware that by the time I pay for the server account for the site, the time
that I spend on questions and answers and updating the site averages out to less than
$1/hour for my time. (considerably less, in all likelihood)

Frankly, the work that I do in my normal job pays over $25/hour, so for me to do the
work at less than $1/hour is pretty much volunteer work, in my book. I certainly do
not expect to get rich off of this amount, nor do I expect to retire on it.

Immigration work is not generally a get-rich quick operation. Or had you not
*noticed* that immigrants do not usually come to the US with their pockets bulging
with money, and that most US citizens that sponsor immigrants do not live in Beverly
Hills? Perhaps this is news to you?

I hope that you feel enlightened as a result of this information. The site is not a
money-making site. If I wanted to make money, I would host a porn site-- I *could*
probably retire off of THAT income! ; )

Let's see... you work on the site for about 4 hours each day, the books are between
$20 and $40, and you get "about 9-10% tops of the selling price of any book in actual
revenue." This means that you are selling about 1 or 2 books every day. What about
the the PC's and the computer parts you try to sell on your message board? Is that
included in the $1/hour?

I think the 10% is not enough. We got offers from mail order bride agencies that
offered up to 20% just for click-thru banners. The problem is that they probably
won't pay you at all. At least amazon.com pays their affiliates. I believe we had
about 6 requests to become an affilliate (books, do-it-yourself kits and travel
agencies). Most of them offered about 10%.

There must be a way. I don't see jonathan posting anymore so I guess he was able to
retire because of the enormous amounts of money he made with the sale of worthless
books on his visa-for-dummies pages. The guy must be a genius!

Yes, it is. I had no idea. I do consulting stuff for $150 an hour, and I never see or
meet those people.

The message board and guestbook are hosted by other outside sources, and the banners
on them are strictly from those sources. I get **no** revenue from those banners
whatsoever. You may read the info from the messageboard provider here, which confirms
that these are outside banners that the provider uses to subsidize the messageboards:
http://server.com/communityapps/discussionapp/faq.html You will note that anyone who
puts their own banners on the messageboard has to PAY the provider of the board,
which I do not. I chose this board only because it was easy to set up and did not
have as many advertisements as other commercial boards that I reviewed.

If you wish, and if your ISP allows you to run your own CGI programs, I could install
a message board for you. It is an easy thing to do.

Don't I wish! But apex does not allow cgi scripting for member pages. That is why I
am using a commercial board in the first place.
