I-485 timelines VARY around the country depending on the District Office.
Some are very fast (6 months), some are very slow (up to 3 years).
Without knowing the OP's District Office, there is no way to say whether or not the application has gone astray.
In addition to checking the 'official' processing dates at uscis.gov, it is a good idea to look for other people online with the same application type and a similar application date to yours.. often the DOs post a date much older than what they are actually working on.
