Default EAD after I-485 submission

Assuming that one has submitted 485 after got LC/PERM and I-140
approved, is he essentially free to apply open-market EAD if
necessary? For example, if he is fired at this point, can he go to
apply for an EAD and thus be able to work for any company?

Another question is, assuming he put his wife on the I-485, can his
wife apply for an EAD and thus start working?

Thanks.

Yes, you can work with EAD anywhere and your wife with pending AOS
too. The issue not working anywhere, it is the same field your I140
approved for, or you will put your application in danger and may get
denied because you changed the carrier by which labor and I140
approved for. Your wife is a different story she can work in any field
because she is derivative and not the principal
