Default Documentation Tip to prove marriage

Hi:

Just returned from a much needed vacation only to go to an AOS interview in Phoenix.

Very good examiner -- she made a request for documentation which I never thought of and which I think is valid -- she asked for joint junk mail! I asked why -- she explained that if you have a life together, junk mail follows and its something beyond the parties' control. We hadn't thought of that and I told her I really liked that and had learned something new!

I thought I pass it on.

Thanks Mr. F, and welcome back!

Funny you mentioned junk mail. I've actually hung onto a few pieces of junk mail in both our names as well over the years, just in case! I have them tucked away in case USCIS RFE's us!

We get junk for each of us, but not joint.... Never thought I'd be sad about not getting a particular kind of junk mail!

We haven't gotten any joint junk but I wonder if this is because we have different surnames? (I kept my "old" married name for the time being because it's the kids' surname.)

FWIW, ours are the same (namely, his).

My wife and I have lived together for more than two years (in the UK) and have never received any joint junk mail.

Welcome back.

I don't think I've ever seen JOINT junk mail - or does that mean both names on the mail, or just junk mail for each person from the same address?

I've never heard of "joint" junk mail. I take it she and you mean junk mail that has both spouses first names on it. FTR, there is one charitable organization for paralyzed veterans that address their pleas to both of us on the address portion and that is only because they provide mailing labels as a thank you for your donation. I had asked them once to please send address labels with both our first names on it and they complied. Thus, all subsequent pleas for help are addressed to us both. Now this might not even be considered junk mail by the USCIS.

Now if she were talking about junk mail delivered to the home address, addressed to Mrs. Blank Smith and another piece of junk mail addressed to Mr. Blanket Smith, then yes that can be provided to the DOA at the AOS interview. However, it doesn't prove the marriage is legit IMHO.

Junk mail comes from companies that buy your name and address from businesses you have dealt with and from credit card companies. Of course, anyone with half a brain knows you have to prove comingling of your lives for the AOS interview and will, of course, have bills and credit cards which bear the same address as the other spouse. So what does junk mail prove that a copy of bill or statement doesn't?
