In any case, this isn't something to approach w/o a lawyer. You FIL should seek UK based advice. I would suggest, Ed Gudeon, who is in my humble opinion, the best in his field, Gudeon & McFadden.
In addition to Ed, I would also recommend his former partner Kehrla Hodgkinson.
