Just thought I'd let people know what the consulate had to say to me when I emailed them, asking wether I could file the petition there. Heres the response I got:
"Thank you for your email.
We would accept a spousal petition as long as the US citizen files it in person at our Sydney Consulate on any Friday between 8-11:30am. Please check our website for public holidays and days that the consulate may be closed.
Filing the paperwork in Australia is a lot easier and quicker than if you were to do this in the U.S. The whole process if filed in Australia can take 2-4 months. This may take 12 months in the U.S"
Hope this may be of some help to someone out there.

Hi There
Im also going through the DCF route in Sydney Australia.
Ive had my medicals and got my police record. Just waiting on the consulate to give me an interview date.
So far everything seems ok and alot easier than the sounds of the K-1. Hope the DCF process is smooth all the way.

I did DCF in Cyprus, and I think it is alot easier than the K visas -- of course it depends on the country as well I suppose. I actually wished now that I had done the DCF in Cyprus at the beginning -- we would have been together a year sooner and would not have had the headaches.
It took us 3 weeks total for the CR1 -- most of it was done before hand by email. Actual time in Cyprus was one week and my husband received the visa same day.

We sent the request for interview for DCF in Sydney around the 20th of
August. We had a reply back on the 16th of September setting an interview
date for the end of October (unfortunately at 8am on a Tuesday, so guess
we're overnighting!!)
Fingers crossed...
