OK, so you have provided the consulate with the original - via the NVC.

To repeat - if you want to get back any of the original documents that you have submitted, be sure to take a photocopy that you can give the consular officer in exchange.

Thank you for the advice, I will certainly take copies of everything I've sent NVC. Purchasing original copies aren't cheap so I definitely want them back...
