Just called the NSC number, they gave these
approximate wait time for different application
forms for the Chicago INS.
N-400 : 8 months
I-485 : 17 months
I-765 (EAD) : 3 months.

Re: Chicago Timelines
Also after talking with several people at the INS,
the day 1 starts from the date INS receives the
document as long as everything is in order.
for example, if you do send the N-400 on Jan
1 and they receive on Jan 5; day 1 = Jan 5th.
if on the other hand, they send the package back
to you because you forgot a form, or did not pay
enough and you resend the package at another
date, the day 1 = the day they receive the package
with updated document, etc.
good luck,

Just FYI...

Re: Chicago Timelines
It is safe to ignore whatever it says on the I-485. Those numbers
essentially come from a random number generator. Even the numbers that
BCIS gives to attorneys (probably the same as what the officer on the
phone had) are informal guesses.

Re: Chicago Timelines
You are right, Ingo. We applied for reentry permits for my in-laws in
Chicago, the first letter said it would take 250-300 days for this
application. We received the permits in about 5 days after the letter
- The whole process took three weeks! It was unbelieveable because the
last time it took 6 months! (They applied in Michigan for the first
one, though)
