I have read the K1 FAQ, but still have a question. My fiance comes
from a small town in Italy and is currently living in Australia. We
have met and are starting the process to get her over here so we can
get married. She tells me that it will be nearly impossible to get
her birth certificate in a timely manner. Apparently the government
office is only open for a couple hours per week and you can only
communicate by fax. We are both pretty anxious to get this process
over and done with as soon as possible.

Is it possible for her to use her passport in place of a birth
certificate? I know it is an alternative for me, the citizen filing
the I-129F, but I could not find anything in the FAQ about this. If
not, I want to let her know so we can get started on the process of
getting her birth certificate while I begin filing the I-129F.

Hi,

Can't you go to the Italian Consulate? Maybe they can help you, as far as I
know the INS/cbis doesn't care about a passport since a birth certificate is
always needed (work permit etc etc)

Hi Bg,

I am under the impression that the beneficiary's birth certificate is 100% necessary at least by the time of the interview. And, if I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure they will also want to see the original of the Petitioner's birth certificate as well.

This was the case for us, anyway. I am just now finishing up Packet 3 in preparation for an interview date for my fiance, and both of our original birth certificates are required documents (copies sent to the consulate ahead of time, and originals to be presented at the interview).

If I were you, I'd get started obtaining the birth certificate ASAP.

Something just came to mind, while applying for a visa here you have to show
the US consulate your birth certificate, if you can't get it they will
provide somekind of a 'birth certificate'. (this was with a polish girl
living in Holland) She didn't have any problems she told me, only she had to
answer a lot of questions.
