Well then he has to talk to the Brit ladies here on the forum, particularly in the Canadian forum. They all ask if Canada gives the same allowance monthly for child support as the UK does. They said it goes to every parent regardless of marital or working status.

How so? And I do not consider it a prejudice. I think it is very liberal of a government to give an allowance to support a child when the child's parents conceived the child, chose to have the child and it is their, not their government's, responsibility to raise that child. It is what I believe. That is not a prejudice. Tax allowance for a dependent is good but suppose some might see that in the same light.

In fact, I see it as an interference of Big Brother in your life, something that you are definitely against. Peace.

No real need for that now........he pays his child support as the children live with their mother in the UK. If there is anything available for her, believe me, I'm sure she's got a handle on it.

Depends whether you believe in a common wealth and the rights and obligations that come with it or not, I suppose. Grizzly Adams managed to opt out. Unfortunately, most of the rest of us need to participate.

Yep -- you have prejudices Rete! The funny thing with yours in this board is you are totally oblivious to them within the very different culture of a British expat forum or, indeed, the very multicultural one of the marriage forum. But I love you anyway as you are, especially since you're unlikely to change. Svet mier!

As you say, not really that much different from giving a tax break except insofar that it ensures wider distribution -- you can't claim a tax break if you don't earn anything. Another point in its favour during the times I remember it (pretty sure it's changed nowadays) was that it was paid directly to the mother at the post office. This gave some financial independence to women who did not work and had controlling partners.

From a wiki:

For "with(out) prejudice" in law, see Prejudice (law).
In its original usage, the word prejudice referred to a prejudgmental statement of ill doing, or an evaluation or decision made before the facts of a case could be properly determined and weighed.[1] This usage was subsequently broadened to include any unreasonable attitude that is unusually resistant to rational influence.[2]
To you, I may have an unreasonable attitude that is resistant to rational influence, in as much as you deem my attitude to be unreasonable and your opinion or beliefs to be the rational influence I resist.

For the purposes of this article, which is examining prejudice within a single, overarching, theoretical framework, it is important to define the word as follows: Interpersonal hostility that is directed against individuals based on their membership in a minority group[1]
What interpersonal hostility have I displayed against individuals based on their membership in a minority group? I have no hostility toward anyone or group on this board. I have issues with people trying to shove their opinions and beliefs down my throat or ridiculing me because of my opinions or beliefs which are different then theirs. Whereas I might at times appear to be a conservative in political matters, at others I am quite liberal. I don't believe in socialism or a commonwealth. This is not a prejudice. Just as your belief is not a prejudice.

When this definition is applied, prejudice generally refers to existing biases toward the members of such groups, often based on social stereotypes; and at its most extreme, results in groups being denied life,[3] liberty,[4] and the pursuit of happiness[5][6] or, conversely, unfairly showing unwarranted favor towards others[7].
Now here you might have a case. I admit to biases towards some members of society, i.e. criminals, druggies, alkies, freeloaders, and trash. However, that bias does extend to the denial of their right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. I just don't want them in my life and I believe that they should not be granted latitude or reward for their behavior. However, my biases do not extend to race, creed or nationality. While I would never intermarry outside of my race or religion, I do and will always welcome any person regardless of race or religion into my home and life as a friend. Does that make me prejudice or a bigot? I don't believe so. I have learned much for those with different lifestyles and cultures from myself. My husband calls me a paradox in this regard.

I am what I am and I don't want to change but if change is necessary then I will. I will listen to other opinions and viewpoints, however, I turn my mind off completely when it is forced on me by someone who is overzealous in their zeal to convert me. Give me facts, share your thoughts and allow me to mull it over and come to my own conclusions. Individuality is a human trait and no two people have to agree on everything or anything. That is what makes us human. The ability to think, rationalize, preceive and determine.

I very often find you overzealous and extremely opinionated and unwilling to allow others, such as myself, to hold their own thoughts and beliefs without ridiculing them for thinking different than you.

Ironically, we are posting more and more alike of late. Now that is a damn scary thing, methinks.

Funny thing is that my Mum mentioned the Allowance when I talked to her this morning.

Going back a very long time, she went to pick it up at the Post Office, late on a Saturday. They told her they did not give it out then as it would just be spent on Booze and Ciggies. She told them she wanted to put it into her savings account so they made an exception.

I believe now it is is given with one hand and taken back with the other.

How can you not believe in the common wealth? It isn't a religion so it doesn't require faith! Rather, it is a simple fact. You can't believe or disbelieve a fact.

Oh hell -- arrogantly expressing my prejudices, again.

"child allowance" is paid in other countries and not just the UK. Child allowance is also deemed as a sort of sweetner, for couples to have kids that they are not in it allone. The governments are seeing that the child birth rate is going down, hence the tax payers of the future are not being born!!! So they give a little financial "support" i have no idea what it is in the Uk i know in germany its 154 euros per month .. so that the government is seen as doing their bit for the future .

What i find most disturbing is the poster feels the need to live off the state because if she worked she would be no better off. That is not what the system was introduced for. Welfare was brought out to help those in NEED! i know it can be very frustrating going to work and knowing that the neighbour sits at home all day and has just as much money as I do at the end of the day because of a manipulation of the benefits made readily available.

If ur going to get married, then i would hope that future hubby realises that he is going to have to support u! and as u havent worked for a while, might even find it hard when u do get ur paperwork to actually find a job!
I know being a single mom is hard, but i did it and many others have worked and raised kids and did it without sitting back and letting the state pay to raise them.

If you want to understand the common wealth...

Franklin Roosevelt said in his second inaugural address, “In our personal ambitions we are individualists. But in our seeking for economic and political progress as a nation, we all go up, or else we all go down, as one people.” In short, the common good is necessary for individual well-being. Citizens bring together their common wealth for the common good in order to build an infrastructure that benefits all and that contributes crucially to the pursuit of individual goals.

A government paying people to procreate and increase their future tax revenues. Just the opposite of say China who pays couples NOT to have child.

FWIW, I wasn't knocking the OP for receiving benefits but rather attempting to explain what I understand of benefits in the UK. While I find it strange, as I noted in a more recent post to FB, it is not unlike a parent receiving an additional tax credit allowance on their annual filing with the federal government. While it is not as great an amount as in the UK, it is similar but instead of monthly it is paid annually and the amount is determined by the filer's annual income.
