Default AOS (I-485 denied ) but don't know why

My wife's AOS application was denied by the Chicago Service Center but
we never received an explanation why. A letter is supposedly in the
mail but we haven't received it-we found out about the denial b/c our
EAD was denied. I think the reason is abandonment since we have moved
3 times in 3 years since our application and INS probably never
updated. We are happily married for over 3 years and have a 1 year old
son--isn't that reason enough to grant my wife residency and
permission to work?
Is our best action
1) to refile the AOS esp. if we want an EAD ASAP
2) file a motion to reopen
3) hire an immigratyion lawyer for $1,00 (which we can barely afford)

I have already contacted my Congressman and Senator but I don't know
how much they can or will do. Thanks in advance.

Have you and your wife filed change of address (AR-11)?

CAll the national service center and ask for the reason. You may ask them to update your address as well.

You already got some very good suggestions: calling the national service
center and asking for a reason, and contacting your Congressperson are
both excellent.

Beyond that, before deciding on your next action, you need to know what
happened. If you informed the Chicago USCIS office of each change of
address (and have proof of that - certified mail receipts), then it would
be their fault, and a motion to reopen should probably succeed. However,
do keep in mind that IN ADDITION to informing the Chicago office, your
wife would also have to file the AR-11 change of address notice. Failure
to do so is a deportable offense; in fact, a number of the so-called
terrorism suspects arrested after 9/11 had done nothing wrong but failed
to file the AR-11.

Regardless, though, I think at least a consultation with an immigration
lawyer is an excellent idea. You may be able to just call a good one and
arrange for a one-hour consultation. Be sure you prepare well and bring
all your paperwork. That can save you considerable money over hiring him
to do the whole job.
