AOS - Chicago - Interview success
For those interested in our timeline;
entered on K-1 visa 10/2001
Married: 11/2001
Applied for AOS in Chicago 12/2001
1st EAD 01/2002
1st fingerprint: 04/2002
2nd EAD: 01/2003
2nd fingerprint: 07/2003
AOS letter arrived: 12/05/2003
AOS appointment: 1/27/2004
Approved same day
Our appointment was at 9:50am but we were not called in until 11:40
am. We waited in the second floor waiting room. People were called up
according to the interviewing officer. Each officer has a number and
you can see which officer you have by the number on your appointment
letter. It is under your name and address. We had number 5 and she was
the slowest it seemed. Others were called quicker. After we were
called up to the 23rd floor, we waited in a smaller room until our
officer called for us - another 20 minutes.
She asked my wife (K1 fiancee) if her name was...if her address
was....if her birthday was... All my wife had to do was say 'yes'. The
officer went through our paper work asking for drivers license (any
I.D.),my wifes passport, my new I-864, IRS statements, birth
certificates for me-my wife and our son, marriage certificate. She
asked a couple of basic questions, i.e. "any crimminal convictions?
and past marriages? e.t.c... She took the EAD and advance parole.
She never asked for anything else - not even to look at our pictures
or any other paperwork (which we had). It took about 10 minutes. She
removed the I94 from my wifes passport but was not going to stamp it
because her passport had expired. But she relented and stamped it
anyway but said it would not be of any use. My wife would have to have
her passport renewed and go back to the 10 W. Jackson St office for
another stamp to be put in her new passpost. She gave us a letter
"granting permanent resident alien status as of 1/27/04"
"This letter should not be regarded as proof of that status. You are
being processed for an alien registration card which will be mailed to
you.....within the next few months."
The officer said that the green card should arrive WITHIN 18
MONTHS!!!? She did say it might be sooner but that it can take up to
18 months.
Anyone have any timeline as for how long it took them to get their
greencard after their interview at Chicago?
Someone said to bring two ADIT photos (which we did) but the officer
used the two I had sent in with the I-129 back in 2001.
My wife had a friend come to Chicago on a K-1 visa (same country
Vietnam) in April 2003. Her friend got an AOS interview 6 months
later. Go figure!
Thanks for the help from this group.

Congrats!
I have my interview this week too Though still gathering documents.
I think you should get the green card in 2-3 months... just
get the passport renewed and go get it stamped again.

Re: AOS - Chicago - Interview success
Congrats.
My wife got her greencard about 3 months after the interview in Chicago.
Her AOS interview was about 1 year after her arrival in the States.
