Hey all,
Quick question, I assume while my CR1 visa is processing I am unable to apply/obtain another working visa in the US (I.e. I assume I cannot get a J1 and be working out there while my CR1 is processing?)
Thanks,
Cat

The two visas are independent of each other so, yes, you can apply for a different visa while you already have another visa application in progress.

Considering the Immigrant Visa only takes 8 to 10 months to process, would you even have time to apply for a J-1 and get to the USA to work? Seems timing would be tight, and wouldn't really be worth it just to stay in the USA for maybe 6 months on a J-1. You'd need to go back to your home country for your medical exam and Immigrant Visa interview.

Quick question....We're currently waiting for our NOA2. Is it possible to get the medical out of the way before this is approved? Or do I need to wait until I have an interview date before I can schedule a medical?
Thanks,

You need the Alien registration number to have a medical. If you have that you can book a medical.
EDIT: Just looked and saw that you have only just filed the I-130. No you cant have the medical yet. I would be prepared for a long wait - average USCIS process for I-130s is now 7.9 months. We have been waiting since June 18th.

Plus, the medical results go directly to the embassy. Even if you could do it now, you wouldn't want your medical results sitting around the embassy for almost a year, waiting for your case to catch up!

I think that what one needs to book a medical exam is the DoS visa application case number. Not the same thing as the Alien Registration Number, which is assigned by USCIS. (But if the Receipt Notice for the I-130 petition has been received, then the OP possibly does know what their A# is.)

Further, the Tb portion of medical exam is valid for only 6 months, and the visa, when it is issued, will only be valid for as long as the medical exam remains valid. So taking the medical exam now may be a waste of time and money as it may no longer be valid, and need to be re-taken, by the time the visa is ready to be issued.
