Default Alien Registration Number Change I-129F

Hi,

I checked my case status today and got the following message -

On March 12, 2013, your Alien Registration Number was changed relating to your I129F, PETITION FOR FIANCE(E). Please check our website at www.uscis.gov for further updates on your case. Please wait until the end of normal processing time before calling customer service at 1-800-375-5283 for live assistance.

Can anyone let me know what this means? I have checked on other websites and it looks as though most people that have had this message have previously had a visa of some kind.

I have not had a visa at all previously and this is the first time I have ever applied for any kind of visa. I have also never had an alien registration number. Some websites also say that we may hear shortly regarding our NOA2???

Has anyone had this message recently or know what this would actually mean.

Just a little confused about what I am reading everywhere.

Many Thanks, Carly

Well, basically it means what it says...USCIS changed your alien registration number. It may be a mistake (as in the message was meant for someone else and you got it by mistake), or some kind of internal change was actually done. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to find out what it's all about until you go for your K-1 visa interview and ask in person.

Because it relates to an I-129F petition for a fiance(e) visa, which is a marriage-based visa to the USA.

My guess... they have no category for someone who doesn't yet have an A#, so a "change in A#" indicates you've probably been assigned one.

If you are the petitioner, recognize that the A# that is assigned to the case actually is associated with the beneficiary of the petition, not you.

An A# was assigned when the petition was first recieved by USCIS. It may or may not have been entered on the Receipt Notice. In any event, for whatever reason, as the notice you've now received is telling you, that original number has been changed.

I'm with Ian on this. Since it apparently was not issued yet to OP, I suspect it refers to the creation of the number. (I have some vague memory of something ambiguous/unexpected like that message in my case way back)

I am under the impression Alien numbers do not change - like your SSN. Even for future visa applications.

One's alien number *shouldn't* change, but sometimes USCIS makes a mistake and it gets changed...or even 2 different ones get issued to the same person.

Your impression is not quite correct. A person can be assigned multiple A#s if they submit multiple cases to USCIS - my wife, a K3, had several. Ultimately the case files will be be combined and once a person becomes a PR the number that is on their I-551 will not change again.

I don't think so; in fact this has happened to a lot of VJ's K-1 community recently, for example. It seems to be the new 'normal.'

It's probably a newly assigned number with the nearest (but confusing) message, or something fairly similar. Either way don't worry about it.
