Alaskan cruise requires AP?
Hello,
My fiance is Canadian...our K1 has been approved, and we are going to do
a honeymoon before actually obtaining our marriage certificate. We were
wondering if AP would needed if
1)We enter the US, cruise from Seattle, and then stay in the US
2)Go on the cruise from Vancouver, and then enter the US afterwards
In case 1, the cruise goes to vancouver, and in case 2, the cruise goes
to Alaska...so my question is do they check for visas in both situations
or do they have exceptions since it's a cruise.
Thanks,
Osman

In #2, you are trying to enter and leave the US, which sounds sounds a lot like #1 to me.
I'm not up to date on my cruise info, but I'd guess that they would require the same documentation that the airlines would, if you were flying to these places.

Would going on a cruise to a State be considered leaving the USA? (you are on the ocean)
How about flying to Hawaii.... Same thing ( you are in the air).

Sorry, I made the asumption that a cruise deaprts and returns to the same port. So in #2, they would leave from Vancouver, visit Alaksa, then return to Vancouver. Which would be entering on a K-1 and then abandoning it as they return to Vancouver. I guess the OP needs to give more info and I need to stop making assumptions. =)

I guess it depends...on some Alaska Cruises ..they start from Canada...others start in the U.S....If the cruise..originates in an American port and makes no stops in Canada...then, it would be ok...

There was a thread on that earlier (few month to 1 year back). Do a search. Cruise ships to Alaska apparently usually make a stop in Canada for some obscure reason (something financilally related for the ship company). So you need to be careful as to what your itinerary is. If she enters on a K1, you go on a cruise to Alaska that stops in Canada, she will not be able to renter the US as K1 is a 1-entry visa.

Re: Alaskan cruise requires AP?
Firstly, congrats on your K1 approval. My thoughts on your question are as follows:
Will the USCIS even issue you AP at this point, i.e. before you get married? Don't you have to apply with your Adjustment of Status following your marriage? I am sure that someone else here can confirm this.
1) If you've already entered the US on your K1, it cannot be used again. I believe it would therefore be foolish to take this route as you would be leaving the US without marrying within the 90 day rule.
2) So this would make your POE Alaska, right? Still dodgy in my mind because your cruise may take you outside of the United States.
Good luck and I hope you work something out for your pre-honeymoon!

Re: Alaskan cruise requires AP?
Hello,
I've pretty much determined that leaving from Vancouver isn't possible.
I guess I need to make some clarifications here. First, yes it is a
round trip cruise. Second, I know that even if we are leaving from
Seattle, there is a stop in Canada, which was the crux of my question.
Do they ask for your visa when you get back on the ship? Because if they
don't I don't see a problem. We use the visa to get to Seattle, and then
we never need it again. However, if they ask for a visa after getting
back on the boat in Canada or after getting back to port then we are in
trouble. I was hoping someone who had done a cruise like this before
could chime in with some first-hand experience.
Also, what if we never get off the boat in Vancouver?
Thanks,
Osman

Yes if it turns out to be too risky we are just going to spend the week
in Vancouver...I am just exploring my options at the moment.

It is related to US law prohibiting foreign ships from transporting
passengers solely between US ports. This is why they have trips from
Mexico to Hawaii and trips from Hawaii to Fanning Island.

Are you only going to cruise Alaska. Every AK cruise I ever went on
either started, ended, or stopped in Canada. This would be due to
foreign flagged vessel restrictions against carrying only domestic
passengers

How are you going to spend the week in Vancouver??
Vancouver is in Canada. You can't enter the US on a K-1, get married,
and then rush off to Canada without AP

In both cases your ship is going to be in Canada. It can't legally
cruise from the US to the US, without having a foreign port in the
trip, assuming it is one of the normal cruise ships that are foreign
flagged.
