Affidavit of support: What are requirements of co-sponsor?
Hi all,
Had a question regarding the co-sponsor requirements (for affidavit of support)... Does the co-sponsor need to reside in the same household as the original sponsor? Does the co-sponsor need to reside in the same state?
Thanks,
- khabibiuf

ONLY a *joint* sponsor has to reside in the same household. A joint
sponsor is NOT the same thing as a co-sponsor. If using a joint sponsor,
the income of the joint sponsor can be added to that of the sponsor. If
using a co-sponsor, the co-sponsor's income must be sufficient for
his/her household PLUS the intending immigrant.
The co-sponsor can reside in any household anywhere in the US. The only
requirements are that the co-sponsor be a US citizen or resident, and
that he/she have income and residence in the US:
Refer to the law:

Re: Affidavit of support: What are requirements of co-sponsor?
Hi:
Thanks for your posts. I had always thought joint sponsor
is the same thing with co-sponsor. I am a student on F-1
VISA,and my yearly income from on-campus work ( teaching )
is $14000. My wife (citizen) is also a student and her
part-time job pays her about $5000 a year. Her parents agree
to sponsor me. Is that true that her parents will be
the "co-sponsor", and they will fill I-864 and I-864A.
Am I eligable to be the "joint sponsor"?
Thanks,
Yi

For the K-1 we should probably also mention that on the actual affitdavit there are no instructions regarding joint sponsors and therefore you may no tbe able to combine the income even if you live together.
I would think the consulate would be bright enough to think that combining the income on the I-134 should be enough since that is a prelude to the final I-864. In other words, the joint sponsor will probably also be the joint sponsor on the I-864. But... it's best to ask for this information directly from the consulate. They can be kind of testy if you don't have some type of assurance on paper on these matters.

You have the first part right, Yi. Your wife completes an I-864 with her insufficient income and her parents complete another, with the I-864A if they will use combined income on the I-864. You *may* be able to include your income and effectively sponsor yourself *IF* you and your wife have shared the same household (not necessarily married) for 6 months or more.
