Adoption of step-son
Hi. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in the adoption of a
step child. My wife came with her son almost two years ago on a K-1. We have
since married, and they have their CPR cards, which we will apply for
removal of the conditions this October. We are residents of New York State.
So I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for the
adoption. I would rather not pay attorney's fees, and figure if I can
complete the K-1 process myself (and with your help of course) that I should
be able to complete the adoption process also. Thanks in advance for any
leads you can give me.

Do you have the consent of the other parent?
If you plan to do the adoption by yourself, then you should check with
the local court office handling such thing in order to check on local
procedures, etc. We did it in California and it was rather easy. My wife
got the "father's" notarized consent and and got a certified translation
prior to moving to the US.

You might also want to see if there is an adoption newsgroup that might
offer support.
