Yeah, really.
I would have thought Celine would have been a lot higher up there... and where the hell is Ben Johnson? Avril Lavigne? or dbd33?

OK, but - why Pierre Trudeau? I'm far from being an expert in Canadian politics, so I may be omitting a lot of crucial facts here, but... OK, here goes: I like Trudeau. Am I unknowingly being a worshipper of the Great(est) Satan?

Re: "The Worst Canadian"
That survey looks like it was carried out in a redneck bar in Quebec, and one frequented mainly by Catholic priests.
A rather larger survey (1.2 million votes) carried out a couple of years ago put Trudeau at number 3 in the list of greatest Canadians.
I'd never heard of Hannah but I can see him not appealing to people who marry their cousins.
Morgentaler? That says a lot about the survey sample.

I think Souvenir's wrong about the Quebec bar. Google suggests that Chris Hannah is only world famous in Winnipeg so either the survey was done there or the sample's so small that he voted for himself a half dozen times and qualified. I suppose he'd have to be a history geek to have heard of the poll, perhaps he is.
The results do suggest that it was conducted in the west (Trudeau) and in a born again religious community (Morgentaler). I'd guess either Bountiful BC or wherever Weebo Ludwig lives in AB.

Trudeau was very controversial as a politician - I suppose none of you are old enough to have suffered from the NEP that he brought in which devastated the Western provinces, and of course the War Measures Act he instated and certainly in the 70s Ontario was a huge PC place. Trudeau was famous internationally but never that popular in Canada from my experience.

I know he wasn't popular in the West because of his policies. He also famously told western farmers it wasn't his job to sell their wheat. He made his mistakes but really no worse than Mulroney who ironically now seems to be revered for having done Canada some good.
He was very popular at the outset. I recall Trudeaumania. I voted for the guy, he was my MP for years. His govt. was elected thrice. QC sent 74 of 75 federal MPs to Ottawa.
The awkward six month Joe Clark era was simply an accident.
Many said his calling out the army was overkill. He only responded to the request from robert bourassa the QC premier then. But at least this place, QC, didn't turn into another bloody deadly Ulster. Those who lived through those dark days in Montreal have vivid memories as do I.

Re: "The Worst Canadian"
Trudeau was the worst thing that happened to Canada, his policies have scarred this country forever.
I met him once, tiny little man, was going to bawl him out but afraid I would get arrested.
Small World, my neighbour was one of Trudeau's Personal body Guards, we don't talk about him.
His policies irrevocably divided this country and ensured its' eventual break up into regions.
Rumours were he swung from both sides of home plate.
Next to him, Paul Anka, Jim Carry, John Diefenbunker.

Trudeau shaped modern Canada. Bilingualism and multiculturalism, the core values of the country, date to his administration.
I could not have met him but contemporay accounts indicate that, although vertically challenged, he was hung like a horse and could go for hours. TT Boy is said to have modelled his physique, often called "just a life support system for a penis" upon that of M. Trudeau.
My neighbour was also responsible for guarding Trudeau, as well as Mulrooney, Chretien, the Queen and countless other dignitaries. It has little to do with anything but he's an alarmingly poor shot for a security agent.
Without Trudeau Canada would consist of Anglo and Francophone cliques yakking at each other, the diversity that binds Canada dates to him.
The social climate in which one's sexual orientation is no longer a matter for derision dates to Trudeau.
Among politicians Mike Harris and Ralph Klein have scarred their provinces and brought suffering upon the residents. Celine Dion and that creepy pedo-guy have likely done more to harm the reputation of the country abroad.
