You won't go wrong with an Eddie Bauer down coat/jacket - he was the inventor of the down jacket and for 30 years(or summat) the only brand you could get with the 'waffle' style down fill. I will stand behind what I say about the EB stuff, I sell it and I bought a 365 down jacket last year, it is really warm and light and squishes down to fit ina little bag for when your shopping and stuff. The first accent stuff has been guide tested - a little pricier, just getting it in store now and it's really nice - might want another EB jacket this year:eek: |
Re: Winter clothes for Ontario
I don't live in Ontario, but spend plenty of winters in Montreal to understand what clothing's required. I never invested $500+ in a down coat, but perhaps half of that at The Bay on a London Fog down coat, and it did me very well!

To me EB is now just a lifestyle store...and overpriced at that...didn't the US company declare bankruptcy recently.........EB and LL Bean are a long way off their original market.
Eddie Bauer down is the 1st and it's award winning. When I get customers coming into the store saying my 20 year old Eddie Bauer jacket needs replacing, I have tried other brands but they don't last as well, I am more than happy to help them find something and they are more than happy to part with their money - we already have people coming in looking for winter coats because they want to make sure they get 1st dibs. Now I'm very disillusioned with the store I am working in and am job seeking - if I need a new down coat in the future it will be an EB. |

Re: Winter clothes for Ontario
As others have said, depends on where in Ontario you are. For example, Thunder Bay gets very chilly, whereas Toronto gets just chilly :D
Plus point for me is it's a dry cold and not a wet damp cold. My first winter here I was out in a lightish jacket and it was -17 in the car, and it wasn't too bad. Flew back to the UK and it was maybe -1 or probably more like 1 - 5, and I was very cold, damp vs dry. My winter coats used to be either a thigh length wool overcoat that I got at Burton when back in the UK, or a ski-like jacket I got from Mark's work warehouse. Neither were really ideal for the weather so I did a bit of hunting around. I looked at Victor Knox, The North Face, Patagonia and quite a few others. I finally settled on a Canada Goose Expedition Parka 4565M. It's not cheap ($610 at SportingLife) but it is very, very good. I got it towards the end of winter last/this year, so it's not had a complete season's worth of use, but the short time I did use it, it was very very good indeed. Kept me very warm when walking the dog or shoveling the drive. I'm in west Oakville, so very near to Burlington, so I'd expect it to be about as cold there as it is here. I do agree about the overheating aspect, and certainly with the parka I was wearing a t-shirt underneath as I was far too warm with anything else. |

I'm seriously considering this one $149!... below the knees is great if you're walking to the LRT station .. and those snow boots too .....
http://www.landsend.com/pp/DoryDownC...8&origin=index Not sure but I think the price is US$ See if your local Sears store has a Lands End shop and thus see if they have the coat there, it'll be in CAD$ and also no shipping. If it's not in stock there, then ask if they can get it, and how much. My guess is they'll get it from the US, but they might not charge shipping if you pick it up from the store, but do ask. There was, last time I looked, a note somewhere prominent on their site stating the prices are in $US. ** edit ** Ok, if you go direct to Landsend.com then it does not have a little message, but if you go to Landsend.ca it'll do a fancy redirect to their pseudo-canadian site and that does have, in a little red banner at the bottom that prices are in US dollars. This IS a little confusing I feel LLBean is the same as well. |

Its very similar to the one you posted a link to.http://www.allthingsarctic.com/cgi/d...item_num=3035L Ah, Canada Goose parka, lovely. That will seriously keep you warm, very nice and toasty. It is a little pricey, but it will last, and there's the key. You might get a cheaper one that'll last a couple of years, but I'm confident my CG parka will last, at a minimum, six or more years. |
Re: Winter clothes for Ontario
If you want to be able to pose down the pub, get a very expensive jacket and feel all smug. If you want to have something that actually works, look at what the local people that work outside (construction workers, farmers etc.) actually wear - down jackets from overpriced shops it won't be. If you want to look great when you summit on a new route up a mountain, then ensure that the sponsors of your expedition provide you with said down jackets.
The "high end" clothing is very technical and will serve you well when you are in extreme weather and considerations such as wicking ability and weight are concerned. For waiting for a bus, walking the dog or going from car to place of work, a windproof, waterproof jacket will suffice. I would imagine you already have something that will suffice in your current wardrobe. When it gets really cold, you can add a fleece underneath this. Anything else will make you look like the typical "all the gear and no idea" merchant.:p |

You know, I should learn to read! I was about to ask how you managed to get 600 odd dollars from a US price of 140 US. Doh! on my part there. Helps if I check what you are referring to.

That seriously out me off. |

Over priced? well I dont know about that, surely you get what you pay for? My current winter coat from the UK is all wool, with a faux fur collar, which on titchy me, nearly touches my ankle, thing is, it has a bloody big split up the back = drafty. Construction workers, now your talking, but would rather look at them in the summer, when their bronzed 6 packs are on show. |
Re: Winter clothes for Ontario
BTW if you buy a long down coat with a zip make sure you can unfasten/fasten it from the bottom as well as the top.
I bought one for $11 from Macy's (US) in their summer sale a few years ago...my other is from Costco around $60. |
