"This storm has been over three days," he said. "When you total it all up over the 40 hours we've seen snow, it snowed continuously from Thursday until now... we probably are dealing with something close 20 to 30 centimetres. That is a month's worth of snow in 40 hours." On Friday, 13 centimetres of snow fell in Calgary, breaking the previous record for that date of 10.2 centimetres, set in 1939. Record snowfall in Calgary as winter storm sweeps over Alberta - Calgary - CBC News 3:28 PM CST Saturday 03 March 2018 Winter storm watch in effect for: City of Winnipeg A Colorado low will bring a wintery mix to southern Manitoba beginning Sunday and tapering off Monday evening. Freezing rain will start over southern Manitoba Sunday morning. Main areas affected will be confined to regions south of the Trans Canada Hwy. Freezing rain will transition to heavy snow Sunday evening. Snowfall totals in these regions will be around 10 cm by Monday evening. Heavy snow with accumulations of 20-25 cm and blowing snow will begin over western regions of the province Sunday evening. Easterly winds increasing to 40 km/h will combine with the falling snow to give significant visibility reductions in snow and blowing snow. |

Every winter our driveway has snow pushed up it by our Mr Plow to the garage, which is about 5 yards further back than the back of the house. In most winters that pushed snow gets about chest height all the way from the garage door to close to the front of the house. It's also quite deep between the side of the drive and the house next door, just from fallen snow. In three winters it's reached past the front of the house to the point that one more significant snowfall and I was convinced it would block the foot of the steps and we'd need to dig directly from steps to the street rather than just to the drive at the side. My mother in law moved here in March of 2011 and that was one of them. Now here we are, a few days into March and all we have is a waist high pile in front the garage doors that's not even half way towards the back of the house. No snow on the drive, nor across to the house next door. There's snow on the grass but not on the streets nor sidewalks. I think we are going to need a record snowfall for March to get close to normal winter snowfall, but it's not just the lack of snow. I heard on the radio that February has seen a daily average of 3c warmer than usual. What has fallen has melted away within hours. |

I think in this age of digital media weather events are hugely exaggerated to provide content. And then that feedsback into the traditional news cycle too. It's easy, uncomplicated, high attention 'news' with dramatic photos and plenty of statistics. Silly, really.

Re: Winter 2017-18
I phoned my mum earlier (birthday today) and it sounds like they've got more snow on the ground than here.
That's Bristol where I never once had to shovel any snow. My brother said it snowed three days running but already melting and it didn't impact on him being able to get there. She lives in a cul-de-sac, at the bottom, no plowing there. I do remember one day once when my dad couldn't get the car out of the drive, as there was too much snow in the circle, but it was okay the next day. |

Red tops which say things like it will be -20 c in the UK and freezing temps for a month really turns out to be -20 c with the windchill at the top of the Cairngorms and somewhere in the UK will be below 0 at some point in any given 24 hour period. |

Where are the reports of 50cm overnight or 30cm in two hours?
Same with 50 cm overnight (say an 8 hour period)...that is very intense snow for a relatively long period of time. |

30 cm in two hours is basically unheard of. The Environment Canada radar imagery has the highest calibration at 20 cm/hr in a purple tone and I've never seen that colour on the radar imagery.
Same with 50 cm overnight (say an 8 hour period)...that is very intense snow for a relatively long period of time. By overnight I mean that when the snow starts in the afternoon or early evening, you go to bed and then wake up to snow two foot deep at the front door and by the time you clear down to the bottom step, the snow is thigh deep around you. Now that may be from drifting rather than official snowfall but it's still two foot depth you have to shovel from the door, down to the steps and into the drive. And we've had nothing like it at all this winter. By now, our deck would normally have snow about half way up the rails with a moses type parting from the door to the top of the deck steps. There's no snow on it. |

Re: Winter 2017-18
Fort St. John broke some records last week.
March first 17.8 cm of snow on March first. Breaking the previous record set in 1964 with 7.1cm. By 7am Friday March 2nd they received another 10cm breaking the previous March 2 record of 8.1cm in 1997. At 7am Friday 27cm had fallen. Average snow for the entire month of March is 28cm. https://www.energeticcity.ca/2018/03...wfall-records/ |

It's coming...
When I was up this morning at 6.30, the forecast for the next 7 days was just the odd cm here and there. Now it has 10-15 on Friday and 5-10 Saturday. So maybe a 25cm storm. Or perhaps it will have disappeared from sight in a couple of hours. :fingerscrossed: |

Trudged to work through a foot of snow, and gladly. We haven't had much and the water table needs it.

If you're looking at the Weather Networks forecasts you can count on it changing quickly. I've seen them say 'flurries' and 25 cm in a day and then on another day 'periods of snow' and 2-4 cm of accumulation.
Certainly you can see nothing remarkable predicted within the next three days and three hours later something big is expected in that time scale. Or the reverse. But major changes seem to happen in all forecasts. I kept it in my bookmarks since we moved as it seemed the most reliable. Certainly whatever they give out on CBC radio makes you want to panic and it's TWN that gets much closer, if not bang on. |
Re: Winter 2017-18
Up to 35cm due Thursday-Saturday and another maybe 20cm early next week.
