Re: The Whisky Thread
Maker's Mark is nice, but would probably go for Gentlemen Jack first. Jack Daniels is poor, JD Single Barrel is too strong for my taste but Gentlemen Jack is pretty smooth. Would love to see the JD distillery one day.
Not too keen on Glenmorangie but I do like a Macallan. An old boss made the mistake of ordering a round of Macallan 18 at a Christmas party a few years ago, announcing his room number for the order. Sure enough several people took the liberty of ordering many more to his room (at about £15 a go). His bar bill in the morning was reportedly legendary, but he couldn't be sure he hadn't ordered them himself!
I will never forget Macallan for that reason.

Crowne Royal? I will have to google that one.

I really like Macallan too, but the past few bottles I've been gifted were the various 'finished' expressions. They are really quite nice for a sip or two only, then for me, the finish becomes overpowering. Madeira, sherry, rum, whatever.. it's too much.
For me it's a bit like the Innis & Gunn beers with a spirit finish.. nice for a mouthful, but who really wants their beer to taste of whisky or rum?

When did Crown Royal grow an e? For decades it was a premium drink, and now carries about the same status as Canadian Club. A lot of kids kept their marble collection in those blue bags with the gold draw-string. By the same token, a lot of kids played sheriff with the star from a bottle of 5 Star on their chests (that's the bottle under the seat of the combine out in the field). The good ryes I've found are the small batch Wiser bottles that have a few more years in, the ones in grain elevator bottles, the football team commemoratives, etc. I can't see any way out of having some kind of whisky when I get home.

You may well be single-handedly responsible for a wasted Saturday morning at this rate. I was inspired to crack the Glenfiddich 15 Solera Reserve open. A considerable improvement over the standard 12 year.
