The Beckett?
We used to live in Offington Lane and my little brother worked for a spell at the Carvery. He'd bring home bones for our dog sometimes, and told his co-workers we had a lion cub at home to feed!
I didn't mind Worthing. I lived there all my life and it was time for a change though! I was sad to see how dingy it looked on my last trip home.

I am so sorry to hear that, I really have fond memories of Worthing, and our staff were amongst the nicest, we had such good times and laughs and yet they did their work so there was never any problems between us, I loved it. When did your brother work there? We had a regular clientelle from the navy come to us, they were great, and believe it or not very protective of us, if anyone tried to be nasty to us about our nationality (don't forget this was during the worst of the troubles) they would not stand for it, I truely loved those boys they were the crust of the earth and I hope each and everyone is safe and happy today

Unfortunately it's really run down and dirty now. If you want to shop these days then you have to go elsewhere as half the shops are borded up now.
Unless of course you want to go to Tescos as there are now approx 12 Tesco expresses and a massive Tescos about to open in Durrington!
It's not the place I moved to 10 years ago

Sounds like Worthing was a nice place to be then.

We're going back in April, just to visit family. All our olds are too crumbly to visit us here, and the younger ones too cheap!
I wish we didn't have to go back at all (and use our precious vacation time and money!) (she says meanly
)

I am so sorry to hear that, but I will aways treasure my memories of worthing and the lovely people we met there, its so sad when things get run down, the thing with the shops, its happening everywhere, all the town centres are destroyed now, with the new malls, and Tesco's ,Asda, Sainsbury's running the country now I think, its so sad all the individuality have gone out of our town centres

I was surprised to see such a north american suburban type of planning there.

I noticed the same thing last time I was in the UK. We went to the Borders to visit family, and yet there were the big malls, the superstore-like big box stores with big carparks, followed by a village barely hanging on.
I was surprised to see such a north american suburban type of planning there.

and the smaller towns and villages have really struggled, the heart has been ripped out of them, generations of family business's gone, old tradesmanships are getting lost, the old qualities of the UK are dying and its very sad to see.
but I suppose thats progress and we all have to accept it. I still like areas of europe, that keep their villages and cultures alive, the great british pub for example has been hijacked by the breweries, and turned into theme pubs for the youngsters, my husband and I never went out to a pub any more, yet when we lived in England we loved the village pubs, they were beautiful, and unique to England, great meeting places,

Yes it is happening all over the united kingdom and Ireland , and it is so sad, the big cities ie London, Glasgow, Edinburugh, Dublin,Belfast will always survive, but the individuality of independant stores, have all but dissapeared,

now it would be hard to find one that dosent have gaming machines, kids drinking out of bottles, and loud music, so sad

That wonderful village life and pub tradition isn't there like it used to be. My family told me the breweries have taken over and whitewashed traditional pubs and are all into food as well. Since when were English people interested in food beyond pub grub and a packet of scratchings? When I used to live there we went to the pub to drink and socialise, a quiet drink in the local with your mates was nice and it was a tradition. Now it's all "continental" by placing emphasis on food or blasting your ears out with loud music to attract the kids. We used to have those before, but they were mainly the large custom made wine bars and the pubs were still pubs.
I don't like the way England has changed, hence why I choose to live abroad, I don't know if I'll ever go back, not if it keeps going in the same direction it is which is likely so I probably wont want to...
