Where do you holiday now?
I'm just curious where those that have made the move to Canada.
For example, we're still living in England but when we go on holiday i prefer to get out of Europe. We holiday at least once per year in Canada and a couple more elsewhere (Singapore, and Maldives for example last year). Our friends in Canada tend to generally holiday within Canada, albeit they own cabins for vacations. Anyway, if you've moved to Canada do you holiday within or do you tend to travel elsewhere? For me, there's so much i want to see there that when we move i'd like to make the most of experiencing my adopted country. Rich |
Re: Where do you holiday now?
We now holiday at Christmas/New Year, to escape winter for a bit and avoid the need to spend too much time with the in-laws. It was Cuba this year, the Dominican Republic the year before and Cuba the year before that.
We would like to go further afield (well, she would; I'm already well-travelled) but it's a question of distance and holiday allowance. |
Re: Where do you holiday now?
Usually France, but going to Cornwall this year with kayaks and then to Norway to see Norther Lights next Feb.

Spectacular coastlines, magnificent mountain ranges, deserts, forests, great cities, interstate highway system par excellence and its people are friendly and generous.

Re: Where do you holiday now?
we have holidayed in Canada and Montana since we have been here - more long weekends than vacations though. We find that foreign destinations are a little prohibitive pricewise. We are really reluctanc to pay $4k to take a stroppy teen away to somewhere warm for a week and Mexico just isn't doing it for me in the way that Spain didn't do it for me when living in the UK.
I must say you do get more vacation deals from Toronto airport caompared to Calgary and Edmonton. Maybe when the world stops ending on an hourly basis we may splash out a little more but we do want either suite or extra rooms now which drives the prices up. We will be travelling down to Montana at spring break for a week of sun and snow. |
Re: Where do you holiday now?
The Highlands back home was our holiday spot, Luss was our favorite place where they did Take the High Road (a soap) that place was nice and the driving past the lochs and hills were great, hated the sodden swans those suckers would chase you and have you ever tried to run with a wheelchair:rofl: those things can run alright BUT all the same we loved it.we use to hill walk and that was really something when you got to the top and now its all just memories but all good ones

Re: Where do you holiday now?
Staying at home is a holiday. Mountains all around and a view one never tires of. We usually have I guess what are busman's holidays (quite appropriate as I drive a 'bus for work). Last year I bought a small aircraft for recreation (luckily while the US$ was at par), and we fly off to different places for a few days. The journey is as much a part of the fun as the destination. No matter how many times a fly a route the scenery seems different every time.
Now I have to decide if it's time to move on and do more training upgrades, or retire and enjoy my jaunts around the country in my lil Cessna 400. Never really imagined this day coming. Once I quit, there is no going back. I digress from the topic, but the quandary I find myself in is that my whole working life has involved travel. Not sure how it will go staying in one place for too long! Not sure if the OH is too enamored at the prospect either. She's not a great fan of flying, but humours me. Life is full if decisions. |

Re: Where do you holiday now?
Since coming here 2 years ago we have been to Orlando, Toronto and visit friends in Caledonia.
In 4 weeks time I head back to Scotland on my own for 9 days and this summer we are driving to Massachusetts to spend a week at a resort and will also go through to Boston for a day too. I own a timeshare in Orlando and have swapped it a few times over the years to resorts in USA/Canada - made our trips much more affordable. One place I really want to go is 'up the road' the Cape Breton - hopefully this year. We will more than likely also head to St Johns NFLD for a long weekend if our son gets a uni place at Memorial. My most enjoyable holidays are sightseeing trips or Orlando theme parks as I like to get out and about as much as possible taking billions of photos  |

It is an enjoyable area/drive but do not expect the Highlands of Scotland. |
Re: Where do you holiday now?
Oregon coast, Vegas, California, Cuba, Mexico and Canada. Lots of variety. I find that for a short driver to Bellingham (about 45 mins from Vancouver) the flights are way cheaper.

In the 4 years we've been here we've vacationed once abroad - Kenya/Tanzania although that was a belated honeymoon/once in a lifetime trip and twice in Nfld. It's such a beautiful place that there is much we have yet to explore here. In addition, both me and the Mrs like to get off the Rock for at least a long weekend once a year either together or seperately. These trips have tended to been to Halifax or Ottawa as we have relatives in both places. With the impending arrival of our first child I expect more vacations to be spent on the Island for convenience and cost. It can be expensive to travel further afield, particularly if you live in an area with no international direct flight connection. AX |
Re: Where do you holiday now?
Brilliant question.
Being a family of Canada fans we try to get there each few years. (Lovely U.K holidays in between though.) Montreal for a conference. Edmonton work related & Recce Toronto (+ Canoeing in Algonquin) Calgary (stampede) Rockies in general a few times now. Newfoundland. St Johns & Gros Morne. If you ask my girls about their best ever holiday, its Newfoundland!! That makes me very proud, but their friends don't understand. So our house is full of 'Canadiana'. Trans Canada signs with moose/bears etc on. Moosie wind chimes. Wildlife prints (limited edition so not all 'tat') Now we think we're emigrating, we'll have to bring it all back! Never been to Vancouver so that would be a must, oh and that place they make wine sounds good. Future holidays will probably be taken up with visiting the folks we left behind. I don't suppose we will ever own our own cabin. Sounds nice. |

It is an enjoyable area/drive but do not expect the Highlands of Scotland. As to holidaying. We’ve driven across Canada both east and west to the coast. We go to the US sometimes to see family and drive down to the Carolina’s. The UK to see family and tour the countryside at least every other year, and last year we had a long weekend in Switzerland. |
Re: Where do you holiday now?
Oh I forgot. We once drove from Edmonton to Winnipeg and back again to Calgary. How could I have forgotten.

PS Pity you couldn't have been at the Yard yesterday. You could have brought the 50. Hopefully I'll get another trip to TO later in the year and an opportunity to have a few beers. (thats unless you're all washing your hair like last time I was in town.......) |

Re: Where do you holiday now?
Since moving here we have spent most summers around Lake Okanagan....However, we decided that the kiddies could deal with extra car time this yr and so we are going to Galiano Island (Gulf Islands)...Can't wait 'cos I haven't seen the sea in waaaay too long!! The house rental was also a lot cheaper than Naramata - where we usually go...
We also try to get down to California at some point during the winter just so we remember what a warm day feels like!! L |

It'd be far too much trouble to provide said evidence. All I have are grainy black & white prints. Yes, it was that long ago.
