Almost ashamed to admit this but this applied to me a week ago this past Sunday.

Downloaded and ran a Registry Editor (cleaner).

Computer restarted to a black screen with a cursor in the middle nothing else.

Took me the rest of the day to convince computer to let me do a system restore.

No need to be ashamed, at least you know how to talk to the computer. Mine speaks a different language
