When did you/will you give notice?
#1
Hi all
Just wondering when people gave / will give their work notice?
i.e
PPR in hand
sold UK house
had home to go to in CA
all of the above
We are trying to balance timing everything at the moment and would appreciate some experiences.
Cheers

We picked the visas up on the Thursday and I handed in my notice on the Friday
However, I was on three months notice, plus I had 4 weeks leave to use up. So, I finished work at the end of May and I'm glad I did as I have been pretty busy - don't underestimate the time you need to have a good sort out!
(Meanwhile, the other half is still at work but he's only on a months notice and will finish at the end of August)
We are looking to fly out around the second week of September and.....aaargh!.....we still haven't sold the house - must admit I did listen to all those people who kept saying don't sell the house until you've got your visa, but if I did it again I think I would just blow it and get the house sold, particularly in today's housing market when you just never know.
Good luck!
Cheers

i'm only on going over on a work permit, and only on a weeks notice, but i gave them 3 weeks, and i finish next friday(3rd) and fly out on the 5th.
But i'd rather have my time off in canada when i get there than back here.

I only had to give 1 month formal notice, but I gave verbal notice of notice about 6 weeks before that so my employers could prepare. I guess it depends on your relationship with your employer.

Some of my colleagues had known forever what we were planning. And it took so long, I think some people thought I'd never leave !
I applied for a career break - but I did finish three and a half weeks before we flew out. And boy did we need that ! As someone else said, if you sort it out or can afford to do it, give yourself a few weeks to wind things up at the UK end. It's quite exhausting, and then there are all the 'farewells' too. Knackering mate !

I was working at the High Commission (not CIC) when I applied for PR. Every knew I was going sometime. I told my boss I wasn't going to resign until I had the visa. She had plans for my position that she couldn't implement with me still in it. It took two months from application to visa. Can't imagine why.

We have just sent passports off. After 3 1/2 years of waiting. It feels like this moment has come out of the blue and smacked us in the face.
We both agree we need to sell our house first. We are looking at moving in March. Notice required for both of us is one month.

Hi Lisa
I gave my firm six months notice as they wanted me to get involved in a complicated project. I thought that it would be unfair if i did not finish it so I told them my intentions. I have to admit it was a great weight off my mind and they have been very supportive although I did get fed up hearing havent you gone yet from everyone. It was great to go into work on Thursday and say guess what 12 weeks and Im off.
Its hard to balance all of the things you have listed and if you are anything like us you put so my what iff's together that you lose yourself.
I would say definitely sell the house before you go as thats the big tie if its worth going then its worth waiting for that bit longer.

7th Sept! so I had to tell her. Up until then no one at work knew. I was super scared and was shaking like a leaf when I did it but am SO glad I did as I think they would have been annoyed if I hadn't given them much notice and it was a huge weight of my shoulders. Plus they've been really supportive, they said they would have been annoyed If I was leaving to go to another company but since I am emigrating it's a bit differnt and not really anything they could do to make me stay.
My partner told his employer about 3 weeks ago and I know he was anxious as well but again they have been really supportive and they're are keeping him on but as a freelancer which is fantastic. So we're almost ready to go now. Most of the stuff in our flat is sold - going to buy suitcases tomorrow, moving out of flat 11th Aug and moving back to parents and also having leaving party (bit premature I know but parents are going on holiday) then a couple of weeks to work finish on the 31st Aug and have a week free before we go - V Excited!
Good luck and hope it all goes ok.
Do you have a job to go straight into in Canada?

I waited until everything was in the bag and had the visa in my hands before thinking about handing in my notice. Even though I only have to give one months notice I've given them three, not that my job is that important. I just thought it was fair as my employers have done a lot for me in the past. Mind you it didn't help when the office mouth got wind of my plans and decided to broadcast my plans through Gossip FM!!
I've left myself three weeks from finishing work to leaving the UK in the vague hope this will be enough time to finalise things. I'm thinking it wont be enough.
Good luck Lisa

Hi, Yes I have a job in canada going over on WP and hope to fast track PR once there.
Work are being horrible to me at the moment, well for last 12 months so in my case its a case of the sooner I leave the better. Had no choice but to tell them as they have to do things for my registration, but I've come to the conclusion that they can be as sh**ty as they want, cause I can do the same back. I've got to give a months notice, but I'm saving as much leave as I can to take during my notice period
. I'll also walk out telling them exactly what I think of them and their management skills, might even time it for during a team meeting
Good your employers have been good too you

I've told my work what my plans are but I haven't officially handed my notice in. Once I receive my PPR i will give them my official 4 weeks notice.
Once i finish work i'll take a week to get everything sorted then fly out to Canada.
