As you were all so helpful about my choice of new car, I thought another question for you to share your knowledge and experience was needed!

Ferrari 458 Speciale.

That possibly doesn't help your choice much.

I'm very happy with my current car, and it's probably one of the better I've owned in Canada (BMW 135is)

The current one, but I don't think they sell the Mazda 2 anymore in North America and probably too small for what your looking for.

Other cars I have driven, but didn't care for as rentals:

Jetta- Poor visibility for my liking, not comfortable.

VW beatle or bug whatever it's called. Same as above.

Other rentals that were okay, nothing special though-

Hyundai (Sonata I think its called) came with a lot of bells and whistles, easy to drive, decent visibility, comfortable seats.

Good one. I keep on threatening to my teenage kids that I'm going to buy shirts from the James May collection. I think he gets his clothes from the same place as Alfie Moon.

Assuming you mean something driven in the past ten years, not built since 2006, then Jaguar XKE series 1.5. It's not an absolute blast in the manner of something minimalist (say a Lotus 7 or Frog eyed Sprite) but, like they say, it offers Grace, Space and Pace.

Unfortunately the past decade has a dramatic rise in value for XKEs so I don't suppose I'll be sitting in another one.

Last 10, nothing overly memorable unfortunately. Last 20, well, it'd include my Citroen Saxo VTS, the first hot hatch I'd owned (no, I wasn't a little chav in it) and I loved the little thing. The other would be my Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon. Japanese grey import, not that quick, stupidly big exhaust and harsh suspension on it. Yes, I modified it further when I got it It also introduced me to a lot of people who I still remain friends with, shared interests and all that.

My Morgan 4/4

Most fun, though, probably sneaks in just under your 10-year limit: a rally driving day in Oxfordshire, driving I think an old Toyota Celica, and then a mildly warmed-over Subaru Impreza, on a short gravel stage playing with lift-off oversteer, controlled power slides, and handbrake turns.

I don't own a car these days, but use rentals quite often and I almost always get a Chevvy Cruze and I think they're great. In fact everyone likes them. For a small-mid sized car they're great to drive and the cabin layout is good (rare thing these days) and economical.

Last car I owned was a Merc 280SE in Germany. So much power. The guy behind you on the autobahn flashing his lights to get past, even though you were already doing 200 - that was me !

A truly astonishing moment this year came when we were driving along in a rented Chevy Cruze, not having noticed that it was a Chevy and not a Kia/Hyundai/Mazda/other generic grey box, when someone pulled alongside, wound the window down and shouted "how do you like it?". When he explained that it was a Cruze, he was in a Cruze and he intended to buy a second Cruze I was flummoxed. It was as if someone had enthused about a brand of furnace or refrigerator.

As far as generic grey boxes go, the Cruze isn't terrible...but I have to say I much prefer the Ford Fusion
