The fact that milk is almost twice the price of gas. I'm sure there's enough space here to fit a few extra dairy cows in.

You must be delighted the BA strike is deferred.

Land was cheap and plentiful, menial workers could afford detached houses in what is now the west end - vancouver went straight to a suburban model. Fewer apartments were built as was typical in older cities. Density was not an issue in the 1880's. By the sixties, city hall had relocated from hastings and main, the street car had been closed down (start of the problems that still linger in the area today), and the west end had become a slum, many houses had become tenements with no indoor plumbing and deplorable living conditions. Vancouver was not a wealthy place. A radical plan evolved to demolish the west end and build the highrises you see today. tragic but inevitable.

Sure you're not an urban planner in disguise;)

Cows are full of gas, that could be why!

Funny you should say that. If I had my life over, I would be a civil engineer. Would love to be involved in city planning. I love architecture (not sure why I;m here then). But alas, a coppers life it is.

I believe the stained-glass windows from that branch of Birks were saved and built into the one in down-town Calgary where hubby used to work, in TD Square. They're very pretty

Urban planning is one of those professions that you have to make excuses about at dinner parties or other social gatherings. A person is highly unlikely to be a wannabee planner...it is more likely that they would secretly aspire to be an architect..a la George Costanza.

I have to agree with you there as if it wasn't for CanCon most of us could have escaped from Rush, the Tragically Tragic, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion and Loverboy.

I'm glad gas doesn't cost twice as much.

There have been quite a lot of these threads, but I suppose people want to know what bothers people after they've been here a long time.
