What are the little stars for?

What are the little stars for?
Just curious, but under our respective usernames on the left hand side of my screen there are for some people a varying number of little gold stars. I think I have 6, while some people have loads and some none. Does anyone know what they represent? Or how they get there?

I think that some of us are better than others? But I am damned if I can work it out, a few years back I felt 'realy strongly' about lots of things....but nobody, quite rightly, probably cared!

I've noticed that the stars get added fairly quickly for new members, but seem to max out at ten for long-time/very active members. Probably a measure of activity over time. Possibly a dash of karma factored in too?
