what was going on?

Re: what was going on?
What would you guess was going on in this situation?
A group of about 20 people were gathered outside a hospital one sunny afternoon/evening. In the group were men, women, children, and teenagers. They weren't too well dressed and some seemed ehem rather rednecky. They didn't seem to have any organisation and were just milling about, apparently aimlessly. Some were smoking! A couple of the children held a banner with some wording on it.
What would you have thought was going on? Would you have walked through the group? avoided them? gone over to ask what was happening?
I'm curious you see, to know what your reactions would be and if they would be any different if you lived in the UK or in Canada, or town or country.
I'll tell you why they were there later, once we have a few guesses.

Assuming they were, I wouldn't have any qualms walking near/through/around them here in Canada. They would more than likely politely step aside to let you through.
I would've felt uneasy with a group of people like this in the UK and would've given them a very wide berth, whilst avoiding eye-contact with any of them.
My guess is, they were there either to welcome a new baby, or to greet a family member on their release from hospital.
Or maybe, is there a Bus stop right outside the hospital?

Were they waiting to welcome home Billy-Ray/Billi-Jo after recovering from his/her successful gender reassignment procedure?

Hey ho.
It was a family group, waiting to show the banner to a relative who was an inpatient. The banner read "We love you Grandma"
My first reaction was that it looked like trouble so I avoided them. I'm not sure if this is the result of city living, or UK living. ie the Daily Mail effect

bless.
altho this would never happen in the uk, reason: its impossible to park anywhere near a hospital in the uk, and if you do find a spot ( and that is a HUGE if) you have to remortgage to pay for it. £2.40 an hour.
and they say the NHS is free

I just read somewhere yesterday that The Supreme Leader Gordon has decreed , through his mouth piece one Andy Burnham, that all hospital parking fees are to scrapped in the next three years !!! Seems Mr. Darling can spare the cash. Good news eh !

I don't know the hospital parking rates in ON now but ten years ago it was eight bucks for fifteen minutes. Not a great bargain.
