Hahahahahahahahaha London Mike.

Welsh cakes and bara brith. Also a certain type of fudge indigenous to Wales, there's a photo to illustrate that' doing the rounds on Facebook but I shan't post it aS it's a little rude (albeit very very funny) and I don't want to offend anyone (especially as I need all your advice on my big move!!!)

Dear God!

You are British, my man. Lose the wanky US spelling.

The use of "z" is Canadian. As are things like: "tire". Canadian English is between US English and British English. E.g.:

British: licence - licenced - licensing
Canadian: licence - licensed - licensing
US: license - licensed - licensing

Usually these things come about because of American influences, I think all the US car companies that have plants in Canada caused: "tire" to come into common usage.

What would you expect to get in one sort of store that isn't there but is there in its UK equivalent?

Decent sausages, decent bacon, pork pies, decent bread, certain types of vegetables, certain types of cleaning products, certain types of cheeses, various periodicals, erm... it's a pretty long list of things I have to go hunting for.

It reminds me of the UK back in the 1970s, having to go to the butchers, the grocers, the newsagents, etc. all separately.

Interesting to note the shop in Calgary that sells pork pies (thanks for that) as this is something else hubby misses.

He puts them in the freezer so the crust can look a bit iffy but they're perfectly fine. I smuggled in a small pork pie from Tesco's I think last time I was in the UK and I did a taste test and his were definitely better.

I'm puzzled now.

I thought the original point was that there were loads of things one would get all in one place in the UK but not in Canada. So I was thinking that meant that meat, veggies, fruit, clothing, gifts, cleaning materials, hardware, music, movies, stationery, kitchenware etc were all available in Tescos or Sainsburys but not in Canadian supermarkets.

But it seems it's specific rather than general.

Which is a bit of a puzzle to me as "decent" is available in the supermarkets. Perhaps a different kind of decent. Like decent honey & garlic sausages are there but not Bangers. Or decent PEI spuds, but not decent Maris Piper.

There are some fruits I used to see in Tescos that I don't see here but then there are some here I didn't see in England.

Oranges, apples, pears, melon, bananas, grapes, nectarines, peaches plums....they're all here and decent and available in the same supermarket with the decent potatoes, carrots, caulis, broccoli, beans, asparagus, and the efficient cleaning materials etc etc

Aren't they?

Of course, there are some exceptions. "Ordinary" sausages, British style back bacon, but certaain types of cheese? Sobeys has a terrifically varied selection.

Either your supermarkets are less well stocked than New Briunswick ones or you're a very fussy cheese connoisseur

Have you been to Catch 22? I saw it on the telly and the lobster rolls looked nice. Although I can't believe they close by 10:00pm. Is it mainly a retirement community?

I miss proper fish and chips (fish not frozen or doughy and fresh cut chips that aren’t overcooked), smoked haddock (“yellow fish”), chicken kebabs (not “kebobs”) with salad and hot sauce, Aberdeen rolls (kind of like croissants, but flat, far heavier and even more buttery), Chicken vindaloo that burns “at the other end” the next morning, McEwan’s Export, Fry’s Turkish Delight, Ir’n Bru, ready made sandwiches at every convenience store, Resolve, strawberry and banana milk, Muller’s Fruit Corner yogurt, stovies (although I make my own), cheese and pickle sandwiches, and lots of goodies from Marks & Spencer’s (walnut whips, square crisps, etc.).
