Fish and chips can easily be found in those parts of Canada not a million miles away from the sea. Although, round here, fish is cod and cod is fish. I miss a nice battered wing of skate.

Aside from that, Real Ale. That's what I really miss.

And cheaper cheese of course. Thats a given.

If you're missing British food and you live in Canada, you're not trying hard enough to find it, imo.

I don't really have a problem in Calgary, MacEwan's even sell really good pork pies. (Let alone other kinds of pies, some of the stuff he sells is so vile they don't even have it in the UK anymore, some of the stuff I hadn't seen in decades).

I'd say one thing I noticed about Canada is that shopping is a bit like it was in the UK in the 1970s, i.e. you have to go to several different shops to get everything, there is no one-stop shopping like there is in Europe.

Loblaw's aka Canadian Superstore have tons of British stuff under the "President's Choice" brand (e.g. Fox's biscuits, Roses), they even have decent bacon now. Another place I found in Canmore is this shop: http://www.valbellagourmetfoods.ca/

Their sausages are awesome.

Frankly last time I went to the UK there were foods I thought I missed and then I tried them and realized they were all crap mass-produced rubbish and the stuff I was getting in Canada was actually better because I'd gone to the effort of finding various butchers, etc. who made the stuff themselves.

I went into Tesco's and was going: "what is all this crap?"

white rock's fish and chips are as good as anything i had in the UK....there is a british butcher in north van that makes excellent steak and kidney...

I miss the chinese curry sauce on me chips....and rag pudding...although my old pub on the north shore did them on occasion as the manager was from Oldham.

Can't say i really miss much, most items are availible here if one wishes to spend the time and money finding them.

http://www.celticbakeryvancouver.ca/

I try to eat healthier these days anyway.

Funnily enough the last time i was in the UK, i missed the greater range of restaurants that could be had in vancouver, especailly sushi and fresher salads etc. I was in a pub in crinch in derbyshire and asked if they had any healthy options the answer was a very firm, "no." i ordered a very soggy steak and kidney pie and oven chips....crap it was. I found that restaurant choices where i was in the UK were fairly limited.

I know a lot of stuff you can get if you really want it but its not always so convenient or cheap to get hold of. Nothing I really crave but, just occasionally, I fancy Angel Delight, malt loaf and hubby misses cherry bakewells.

Interesting to note the shop in Calgary that sells pork pies (thanks for that) as this is something else hubby misses.

Seek out your local "Bulk Barn" buy-in-bulk discount store. They have a small range of UK chocolates and sweets that includes Yorkes. Or, at least they do here.

Most independent produce stores in Vancouver sell fresh figs, but the larger supermarkets do not (Choices, Whole Foods, Urban Fare, etc. excepted).

What would you expect to get in one sort of store that isn't there but is there in its UK equivalent?

The meat store up the road here even sells salt for melting ice.
