You've collected your friends and or family from they airport after they've been though several circles of hell - Brotosh Rail, Gatwick, Air Transat, Pearson customs hall, a 3 hour journey home via the 401.
When you get to your home you'll hand them an adult beverage or two but what do you feed people at 9pm whose bodies think it's 2am and their bellies are full of vile airplane food and assorted snacks?
A cold ocollation? A cheese and pickle sarnie? A full meal you've only to reheat?

But would you want to eat a full meal not long before bedtime?

homemade soup with crusty bread and butter
home made pizza
assorted sandwiches
Keep it fairly light, definitely not a full meal. You may find they don't want anything except a hot drink and a good night's sleep.

Ditto...finger food...something that will keep until the next day if all they want to do is fall into bed.

If yes, whatever cuppa they want and a nice piece of cake.
If not, sherry and a mince pie.

They are arriving on a jet aircraft, in 2017, not a packet steamer, in 1927.

Yes, soup and a sarnie. Good idea. Maybe toasties. Or just toast.
Interesting concept Bristol, "had their fill of adult beverages" . How dies that work?

Hungryman, bung it in the oven, not unlike some airline food, they'll never know the difference.

Stop at a Timmies on the 3 he drive and load em up on donuts and crappy coffee!
Ok, you said these are friends you like so another vote for something light / and that'll keep if necessary. Toast is a good thought!

Homemade Quiche, Salad and new potatoes is my favourite meal for new arrivals. They can turn it into a snack or a full meal depending on how hungry they are.

She's arriving on Tuesday and I shall probably make a bolognaise sauce and adjust the amount of pasta to her degree of hunger or else I'll make pan seared salmon, rice and veg. I'll also have some fresh fruit, cheeses and other light stuff, in case she's not in the mood for food. Definitely nothing that will increase gas, as that's often a problem after flying!

Edited to add, if I do salmon and rice, I use these rice packets for speed - they are really good - I can have the complete meal cooked in under 20 minutes. Don't cook the rice for more than 1min and squeeze it around a bit before opening and heating to separate the rice. Each packet serves 1. https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/kitchen.../6000196213998 It also comes in Jasmine or Brown Rice varieties.
