what to do in London UK
Im off to London for a month for work. Arrive on Sept 27. Will be in a one bed apartment in Waterloo for about 5 weeks. Wll be using the northern line to get to Hendon Police College daily.
Any suggestions as to what do and not to do while there would be appreciated....beyond Big Ben and the Palace that is, ive been there and done that. |
Re: what to do in London UK
Get off at Mornington Crescent, walk up the Camden High Road, look at the lock. Wonder what the rest of your life was for.
|
Re: what to do in London UK
Bizarre commute though, can't you stay somewhere central or near to Hendon?

Go to the West End and see a show. Even if it's not your cuppa, you gotta see a show! ;)

Re: what to do in London UK
Hendon is pretty shit really. Sorry Hendon. It's one of the Met's priority boroughs!
Kew Gardens if you fancy some horti-culture. Covent Garden for arty-farty shopping. Wander into Oxford St, Carnaby Street, Soho, Chinatown - absorb the atmosphere. Eating out will be mostly extortionate - find some Marks and Spencer sandwiches. Visit the new(ish) Wembley. Go to a proper football match. ;) Greenwich is nice. Think the Cutty Sark is still visitable there? Many of the museums are free if that is of interest. I think just wander - London is good for wandering. Get some people on your course to take you home with them for tea once a week! |

National Gallery, Tate Gallery, Tate Modern, Courtauld Institute, Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, British Museum, Imperial War Museum, Hayward Gallery.
Hampstead Heath, down by the ponds at South End Green as well as the top end from Hampstead High Street. Camden Lock. Visit the Tower. Walk along South Bank from Waterloo to Tower Bridge. Take in a concert or two. Take Eurostar to Paris for the day. Get pissed as a fart in Hendon then fall asleep on the tube and end up in Morden. And remember to Mind The Gap |

Re: what to do in London UK
My niece lives in Putney and when she goes out it's often to the Green Man pub there. I think it's in a 17th century building. And I learned from watching olympic cycling that Guy Faulkes plotted the bombing of parliament in the basement of one of the churches at the end of Putney bridge.

Madame Tussaud's was a real surprise. The dummies don't look too special in photos, but I was gobsmacked when I saw them "live".... |

I doubt if you really need to ask on here what to do in London. You'll be in one of the greatest most international cities in the world. A great city for walking...for experiencing. Just get a guide book read up what is of interest to you and check it out. London has something for everyone. Don't get caught up in the local Aussie/Kiwi pub scene unless you really must. Check it out though....but there's so much more...and you don't have long to experience it.... |

It's disloyal of me to say so but, if you're going to go a football match, Fulham has a wonderful ground, nice walk to it along the river from the station. |
Re: what to do in London UK
Tell them that their driving course is shit and if they want to learn how to drive correctly then they should take some lessons from the Hutton driving school:lol:
Nice to see some expats calling the Big Smoke or parts of it a shithole. Take your red serge and show them what a proper copper looks like;) Have fun. |

If you want something to do, you go somewhere else. I was no stranger to Morden and Edgeware (I once managed both in one go). |
Re: what to do in London UK
There are some eye popping lap dancing and gentleman's clubs in docklands.

Gamble your 70 pounds and go for a night out at the dog racing in Wimbledon.

Re: what to do in London UK
Hendon isn't the nicest place for sure. I went there before through Waterloo and it's about 30 minutes. I think we took the jubilee line then an overland train.
While you're there, you should get to Covent Garden at the Seven Dials and go eat at my favourite Indian. Sartaj Balti house is brilliant. Great food and a very good price too. Personally, i'd have a wander around the usual London sights but i'd also jump on a train to Richmond (15 mins from waterloo) for a steak dinner at Gaucho on the Thames then have a walk through. Maybe jump on a train to Hampton Court Palace to check out Henry's old house, have a walk down the thames or through Bushy Park to see the beautiful deer and get some solitude. Get on a train to Brighton or York (petergate chippy) for some fish and chips. You'd change at Clapham and it'll cost about 20 quid ish. To stay local to your waterloo hotel, i always enjoyed walking from the station to Charring cross bridge and heading east by the thames with the walkway all lit up, past the oxo tower (nice for a posh girly drink) and on to london bridge to Vinopolis (expensive posh drink). For cheap and cheerful food with a great view, go to the Pizza Express on the thames walk near Southwark Bridge on the way from Waterloo to London Bridge. There's tons to do, and it's lovely. My 6yr old neice watch Shrek the Musical at the weekend and loved it  |

I'm out of date with pubs and suchlike. Just avoid the main tourist drags. The Old Vic is near Waterloo for a play, and the National Theatre of course. Also The Cut - it's a street near Waterloo -has many restaurants and pubs. The Oxo Tower cafe restaurant has a balcony with neat views. If you start pining for something Canadian head for the Maple Leaf pub in Maiden Lane Covent Garden. |

(Runs for cover) Pop to the Norfolk broads for a row in a boat, or to one of the world class racing circuits to watch some motorbike racing  Try not to stay too long down south otherwise it'll make you soft. |
Re: what to do in London UK
Enjoy your month in London, for cheap and good food try the O'Neills Irish pubs (Steak and Guinness pies, sausages and colcannon, fish and chips etc). I suppose your closest one would be near to The Palladium by Oxford Circus. I was born and raised in Vauxhall, near Waterloo. There is "The Cut" (Lowermarsh), market closeby and The Young Vic. I think The Cut still has a pie and mash shop. Avoid the pedestrian subways at The Elephant and Castle, lots of muggings. You will love the South Bank for a stroll along the Thames, take in a few shows while you are there.

I agree. Other than a train to York for the chippy, hire a car and pop to the Wilshire country side (avebury?) or to the cotswolds through to stratford upon avon on the way to see your mum.

The Cotswolds (as you say) Bourton on the Water, Stow on the Wold, Moreton in the Marsh combined with Stratford upon Avon Warwick / Warwick Castle York minster and York to name a few. |

To the OP, didn't you ask about London? I don't know why some decided to start giving you ideas for outside London :sneaky: Anyhoo I'll start you off in the eastend Liverpool street market on a Sunday, Bricklane any day of the week for the best Ruby in the country, Greenwich to visit the GMT observatory, the docklands, green street market, the ubiquitous London Eye, millennium bridge, planetarium, sherlock holmes museum, madame tussauds and london zoo accessed via baker street station |
| All times are GMT -12. The time now is 9:06 pm. |
