What Camera??
It is my 30th Birthday soon and my OH would like to buy me a nice camera so I can take my love of photography up a step. I have no idea where to start - any ideas on what would be a good camera?

Re: What Camera??
Pretty general question... there are hundreds of good cameras on the market. Do you want film? Digital? What size? Shirt-pocket portable, or full size? Zoom lens or not? Exchangeable lenses? What price range? What will you be taking pictures of? Family snapshots? Landscapes? Birding? Sports/action?

Re: What Camera??
DPReview side-by-side comparison
Edit: Whoops didn't check the price of the Nikon a bit expensive for starters.
I have a Canon 40D (not listed there) but there's nothing wrong with Nikon, although I do believe there is a wider selection of lenses available for the Canon line.
For wildlife you are going to need a lens of at least 300mm in order to get any decent shots.

One of these three would be a good place to start.

Re: What Camera??
It would be a good idea to go into a camera shop and see which camera "fits" best in your hand.
Most of the hardware has pretty similar capabilities but be aware (if you think you might want to build up a lens collection) that some entry-level models do not take the full range of lenses. Olympus gives good "bang for the buck" but has a smaller range of goodies available. As others have suggested, check out DPReviews.

Re: What Camera??
I have to recommend the Canon digital rebel (Digital EOS in the UK). I have the original 6Mp one but I think entry level is now 8Mp. Lots of lenses and accessories available & ranging from reasonable to 'how much!'. I have the std 18-55mm lens plus a 70-300 zoom & that suffices for pretty much all my needs & that included some wildlife photography in Africa last year. I'm not in Steve P's league of photography but take a few nice shots now and then.
