Another option for crossing the pond about to take off next June.

737's cross parts of the Pacific Ocean daily on various airlines from US and Canada west coast to Hawaii and some of these flights are further then St. Johns to Dublin will be. No issue at all for a 737 nor any different then the 737's that fly to Hawaii everyday.
Vancouver to Hawaii is around 2,705 miles.
St. Johns (where the non-stop portion of said flight starts) is 2,049 miles.
YYZ to St. Martin is 2,012 miles.
Toronto to Los Angeles is 2,175 miles.
As you can see, its really not that long a route when compared to other routes already flown with a 737.
(used great circle mapper for distances.)

This is not even worth a mention....wake me up when they start flying to Heathrow and Gatwick, and may be, just may be Stanstead
This is not HOT at all

e.g. Those (like AX) who have to fly in the wrong direction from NFL to Montreal or Toronto to get to the UK and the rest of Europe.
Folk already in Montreal or Toronto and especially people further west will have no resonance at this stage.
Perhaps in 3-5 years WJ will feel confident enough to invest in a few Airbus 350's or similar and start a proper transatlantic service. I hope they do.

As Novo says, it's big news for those of us in YYT. The introductory fares (now largely gone) of $400 return compare with $1200+ for YYT-LHR on Air Canada. Even having to buy onward flights from DUB thats still going to be far cheaper.
It's an interesting development as far as the larger Canadian Airline market is concerned IMHO. It'll be interesting to see how AC respond.
As for flying across the Atlantic on a B737? Well, I regularly fly across on an A319 without any qualms. It's 4.5hrs from YYT-LHR so I guess a little less to DUB. To put that in context, this afternoon I flew SFO-YUL on a A319 which is a 5hr flight!

Won't be long until EasyJet and/or Ryanair start coming in the opposite direction

Maybe not for you - but for us in St Johns this is quite a big deal , about time we got a chance at some decent prices to get home for a visit
