Two-thirds of what my 2 bed, terraced house in Bristol went for paid for a 4 bedroom detached house on a double lot and a 1 bed/2 bed duplex. Both properties in the city.

I also don't agree that property is more expensive in the UK, it depends on where you are in both countries to be able to make a true comparison, but we got far more for our money here in Canada than we could ever get where we were in the UK.

Did you look into the cost of acreages in Scotland? I anticipate that it would be relatively easy to find lots that are comparable to what you bought, particularly if you looked for ones that had been foreclosed.

If you reread my comment you will see I was making the comparison of where we are now to where we were in the UK, not any general place we could pluck out of thin air. There are apparently houses in Liverpool or somewhere like that going for a fiver at auction - saw it on a programme we youtubed the other night. Looking at our possible future move I did find a house and business by a river in South Yorkshire going for about what we bought this place for.

Prices in the SE UK have gone up at a higher rate than most of the LM BC. We could not buy what we have here in the SE UK for the same money or even close.

We could buy what we had and possibly not have a mortgage, but we wouldn't want what we had and wouldn't want to be where we were. So the UK is still too expensive for us I think.

Have you ever considered Spain? Probably not great for your hubby's automotive hobby, but if you're not feeling that tied to UK or Canada, the warmer climate must have some pull?

My old house was sold again about three years ago. Nothing added. The price it went for, even with the fall in the exchange rate, would still have bought the same two properties (we had them valued) with change and now that the exchange rate has recovered a bit it would still do the same thing and with even more change.

It seems BC may end up the California of the north the way things are going here. January +10 in the sunshine and lows of 0C, don't recall such a thing, sunshine in January is usually accompanied by -10 to -15c temps and strong easterly winds.
