Default vancouver transit referendum

I think we should toll all the bridges, but it sounds like it's not an option.

My guess is it will fail by a small margin.

Thoughts?

I hope it fails. I don't want to pay any more tax.

Tolls become too costly for me to support. Its just too bad the federal govt doesnt do more for transportation, and that we have a bloated transit agency that is incompetant at the best of times who wastes money like it grows on trees.

Transit money should come from the citys that will benefit so I support increased sales tax. People who dont live in metro Vancouver should not have to pay tolls so metro Vancouver can have better transit.

Ideally translink would be shut down and a new agency created made up of elected local officials. Such as what metro san diego did. If 18 different citys there can do ot and keep fares down, metro van should be able too.

We seem to get sod-all here on the Island. Buses are RUBBISH. The ferry should stop trying to be a cruise liner and start being part of an affordable province-wide transit system. The cost for a return trip to the mainland is almost prohibitive.

I guess it's just the price we pay for living on an island.

I will vote yes. Then poor people can get the bus and not get in the way when I am speeding on the freeway.

I'm gonna vote yes too JBE. I just don't care about a little tax. What I do care about is frustrated commuters driving through my neighbourhood and there are not enough transit options for people in Surrey/Langley. It will make this region better. Even the chamber of commerce wants this tax.

Good, we don't need more of them coming into the city anyway, they should stay out in their strip mall and chain resturant heaven.

Or they could charge tourists a extra taxes, it'd either raise enough money or the extra charge would put them off coming, a win win with both cases.

I have a similar opinion about having a two tier charging system for the ferry. The tourists wouldn't know any better and it'd only be a one-off cost to them. Why not have a similar two tier system for all transit?

The ferries are bloody rubbish, they don't even have any decent bars let alone a casino on them.

If a bar and casino would raise a bunch of cash that could be used to bring the ticket prices down, I'm all for it. Sell the staff's first born if it means cheaper transit!

Same in Squamish. Transit is useless. Faster to walk or bike. Plus no service at all to Vancouver and they cut Whistler service a fee years back.

For its size whistler has decent service.

Am I able to vote as a permenant resident?

Or do I just have to pull my pants down, bend over and part my cheeks and take it from who ever is gonna be shafting me for more money lol.

Why not just raise the fare on transit tickets for buses and sky trains.

Fares are already pricey, and as fares go up less people use it, and revenue will likely end up dropping.

You have to keep fares low enough to entice people to use transit and waste a huge amount of time, your looking at double the time or more to go somewhere on transit, a 15 minute car ride, is easily 30+ minutes on transit.

They just need to follow the San Diego method, keep fares low, have a low day pass cost, eliminate transfers, make all fares one way, so people now buy monthly passes and day passes, and they saw revenue increase.

They also have one of the highest fare box recovery % in the US.

But they went with light rail at ground level instead of the high cost elevated trains Vancouver region uses.
